The SUNY Brockport baseball team clinched a spot in the upcoming SUNYAC Conference Tournament and
Tom Kretzler broke the program-record for career home runs as the Golden Eagles split a pair of league games on the road at Cortland Monday afternoon. Kretzler's fifth inning grand slam set the new program standard (21) as Brockport rolled to a 9-4 victory in game one. Cortland responded with 9-1 game two victory to earn the series split.
Brockport, which is receiving votes in the latest D3baseball.com national poll, moved its overall record to 14-5 and they are now 8-4 in SUNYAC play. The Red Dragons, who are also receiving votes in the national poll, improved to 21-5 overall and 12-2 in league play following the split.
Unless Brockport can overtake Oswego in the SUNYAC West Standings, they will travel to Cortland for the conference tournament on May 15
th. Cortland has clinched the top seed in the SUNYAC East and rights to host semifinal action.
Nicholas Pastore went 3-for-8 on the day with one run scored and one RBI, while catcher
Jake Sisto went 4-for-7 with one run scored.
Andrew Huffman won his fourth game of the season in game one as he went 7.0 strong innings and allowed just one earned run on six hits and struck out six.
The Golden Eagles are scheduled to return to action on Wednesday for a doubleheader against visiting Fredonia at 1 p.m. The Golden Eagles will host Oneonta for their regular season finale and senior day on Saturday at noon.
Brockport 9, Cortland 4 – Game One
Brockport jumped out to a 6-0 lead in game one behind Kretzler's fifth inning grand slam and never looked back as Huffman struck out six on the mound to earn the game one victory by the score of 9-4. Nine runs are the most runs the Red Dragons have allowed in a single game all season.
Pastore got the Golden Eagles going with a single through the right side, scoring
Ryan Voight to give Bport a 1-0 second inning lead.
Ryan Mansell then walked with the bases loaded in the fifth to score
Matt O'Dair, and Kretzler's towering home run gave the Golden Eagles the commanding six run lead.
Mansell then homered in the seventh inning and O'Dair singled up the middle to give Brockport a 9-1 advantage.
Cortland tacked on three runs in the eighth inning, but the comeback bid proved to be too late as
Kyle Canavally came on to close the door for Brockport. Canavally finished his 2.0 inning outing with three flyouts and three ground outs to secure the victory for the visitors.
Mansell went 1-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI's in game one, while Kretzler finished 1-for-4 with four RBI's.
Matt O'Dair went 2-for-2 with an RBI and one run scored, while Sisto went 2-for-4 with one run scored.
Cortland 9, Brockport 1 – Game Two
Brockport took an early 1-0 lead in the third inning of game two after
Daniel DelGaizo singled through the right side to score
James Houlahan. That proved to be the only run the Golden Eagles would plate in the nightcap as the Red Dragons earned the 9-1 victory.
Cortland went on to score four runs in the fourth inning and added five more runs in the sixth inning to earn the SUNYAC split.
Pastore went 2-for-3 in game two, while Sisto also added two more hits. DelGaizo totaled one hit and scored the lone run for Bport.
Brockport's
Trevor McCarthy went 5.0 full innings on the mound and struck out five.
Justin DelVecchio closed out the game on the mound and allowed just one hit in .2 innings of work for the Golden Eagles.
