Men's Soccer Hosts Geneseo for Opening Round of SUNYAC Tournament

Brockport, NY – This weekend on Saturday, October 29th the SUNY Brockport men's soccer team will host Geneseo for the First Round of the 2022 SUNYAC Tournament. The No. 4 seeded Golden Eagles faceoff against the No. 5 seeded Knights at 1pm in Brockport, NY.

Regular Season Finale: The Golden Eagles hosted the nationally-ranked Cortland Red Dragons this past weekend for the last game of the regular season. Cortland got the win, 4-1, to lock up the top seed for the conference tournament. Brockport moved to the fourth seed as the loss brought the record to 8-3-5 overall and 6-2-1 in the SUNYAC.

Back to the Postseason: Going into the postseason as the No. 4 seed, Brockport has now made the SUNYAC Tournament in four of the last five seasons. The program is not far removed from its SUNYAC Championship run back in 2018. In history, the Golden Eagles have 11 conference titles and look to make a run at a 12th this year.

Scoring Leaders: With 14 points to his name, Matthew Stefaniw is leading the Green and Gold thanks to five goals and a team-high four assists. Russ Domm is right behind him with 13 points, as he leads the squad with six goals. Max Voyer has eight points on three goals and two helpers. Voyer and Domm are tied for first on the team with three game-winning scores each.

Taylor in Net: Andrew Taylor has been great in net all year for the Golden Eagles, playing nearly every minute of all 16 games as the starter. He has accumulated 59 saves, a .819 save percentage, and .82 goals against average. Taylor leads the SUNYAC with seven shutouts this year, which is also tied for 20th in the nation. He also leads the conference in both save percentage and goals against average.

Against Geneseo: Brockport and Geneseo faced off just a couple weeks back in the regular season, which resulted in a 1-1 draw. After a foul in the box, Matthew Stefaniw scored on a penalty kick chance in the opening half. Geneseo's Tyler Lewandowski tied the game up in the second half to create the draw. In recent years the Golden Eagles-Knights matchup has been tight, with Brockport holding a 4-3-3 edge in the last 10 meetings. Since 2001, the two programs have only met three times in the postseason, with the last matchup back in 2011. In the SUNYAC Tournament, Brockport is 2-1 against Geneseo in the last 20 years in postseason play.

Meet the Knights: The Geneseo Knights are the fifth seed for the conference tournament at 9-5-3 overall and 3-3-3 in the SUNYAC. They won two in a row to finish out the regular season with wins over Buffalo State and Potsdam. Watch out for #9 Tyler Lewandowski, who leads the team with nine goals and 18 points. #6 Justin Arilotta is tops on the squad with five assists, totaling nine points. Second for Geneseo in points is #7 Liam Mulderig with 12 from his five goals and two helpers.

Win or Go Home: Now that the postseason has begun for the SUNYAC, each game could be the last in this win or go home scenario. The winner of Saturday's first round matchups will go on to play the No. 1 seed Cortland or the No. 2 seed Oneonta in the semifinals on November 2nd.
