Oneonta, NY – The SUNY Brockport men's soccer team was defeated by Oneonta on Saturday in the SUNYAC Championship match. After playing through 110:00 still tied at 0-0, Oneonta would pull out the win in penalty kicks, 2-1, to claim the SUNYAC Title.
Just like in Brockport's first-round matchup against Geneseo the championship match came down to a shootout. Oneonta's goalkeeper Nate Hanna made the difference as he allowed just one score on five attempts by Brockport in penalties.
Alex Rivara would score the one shootout attempt for the Green and Gold. With the pressure on,
Andrew Taylor needed to come up heroic once again. Taylor saved the final two shots, but the first two went past which was enough for Oneonta to seal the win.
As expected in a championship match neither team wanted to surrender a goal. It was competitive from start to finish, although the hosting Red Dragons outshot Brockport 15-6. However, only four shots from each side were on frame. Goalkeepers
Andrew Taylor and Nate Hanna each made four saves.
Oneonta seemed to be applying most of the pressure in the first half with five shots and three corner kick opportunities. The Golden Eagles had no corners and just one shot through 45 minutes, but picked up the pace after halftime. Taylor saved two shots to keep the game scoreless going into the break.
In the second half Brockport was able to place three of its four shots on target. The squad also created three corner kick opportunities. The Red Dragons still had the edge however with eight shots and four corners in the second half. With both teams unwilling to let up a score in regulation, the match headed to overtime.
The two teams would play two full 10-minute overtime periods to decide a winner, but neither team could create the opportunities needed. Only three shots total were taken during those 20 minutes, with Brockport's
Warren Banks firing the only one that needed saving. Still tied at 0-0 after 110 minutes of action the game went into a shootout to decide a winner.
In the first two rounds it would be
Matthew Stefaniw and
Dylan Rippe who would be unsuccessful against Oneonta's Nate Hanna. The Red Dragons would respond with two scores from Tristan Battistoni and Ian Zingaro.
Alex Rivara would get the Golden Eagles on the board to start the third round, as they trailed 2-1.
Andrew Taylor would make big saves in the third and fourth round on shots from Ethan Brunell and Lucas Fecci. However, Hanna would hold firm against
Warren Banks and
Max Voyer to seal the win, 2-1.
Following the end of the conference tournament,
Andrew Taylor was selected for the SUNYAC Elite 20. This honor is to recognize student-athletes thriving on the conference championship level in his or her sport, while also maintaining the highest academic standards among their peers. Taylor as a business administration major holds a 4.0 GPA.
Brockport comes up just short of another SUNYAC Title and sits at 9-3-7 overall following the conference tournament. The team now awaits the possibility of getting an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament.
