#23 Brockport's Season Comes to an End After a Historic 33-11 Season

BROCKPORT, NY – The SUNY Brockport Golden Eagles historic baseball season came to an end Saturday morning following a 6-2 loss to the Wheaton Lyons. Wheaton advanced into the third game of the day and faced JWU who lost in game two of the day to Baldwin Wallace..
 
Batting Recap:
James Houlahan, Ryan Mansell, Tom Kretzler, Nicholas Pastore, Brian Tietjen, Ryan Voight, and David Belsito all recorded hits in the game against the Lyons.
 
Nicholas Pastore and Tom Kretzler finished the day with the teams only extra base hits of the game. Pastore recorded a double while Kretzler hit his program record 17th home run of the season and the 38th of his career.
 
Pitching Recap:
Andrew Huffman (8-3) threw 6.1 innings and recorded eight strikeouts in the game for his record 96th strikeout of the season. He allowed four earned runs in the game. Matthew Colucci then relieved Huffman where the SUNYAC First-Team relief pitcher threw two innings allowing on earned run before Justin DelVecchio would record the final two outs of the game for Brockport on the mound.

Game Recap:
James Houlahan's Sacrifice bunt, fielders' choice allowed Matt O'Dair to score on a close plate at home at the plate for the Golden Eagles to take the first lead of the game at 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth. Wheaton then tallied a total of five runs in the sixth and seventh inning to make it a 5-1 Wheaton lead Brockport would then earn one run back on a solo shot from Tom Kretzler in the eighth inning making it a 5-2 lead for Wheaton until they scored again in the 9th to make it a 7-2 game. The Golden Eagle would then be unable to capitalize in the ninth bringing their historic season to an end with a 33-11 record.
 
Kretzler finished his career at Brockport after six years as a Golden Eagles as the record holder in games played (178), Career Slugging Percentage (.629) career hits (202), single season hits (62), career doubles (47), career home runs (38), single season home runs (17), career RBIs (160), single season RBIs (63), career runs scored (156) and runs in a single season (46). He also ranks second in the record books for triples in a career (11), sixth in career slugging percentage (.556) ranks third for most strikeouts in a single season (71), tied for 5th for most wins by a pitcher in a single season (7) tied for 9th in career wins (11),
 
Nick Lawlor finishes his final year of eligibility with the Golden Eagles after transferring from Fredonia State following the completion of his undergraduate degree in the Spring of 2021. In two years with the Golden Eagles, he's made 19 appearance in relief for Brockport pitching in a total of 27.2 innings on the bump allowing a. total of 13 earned runs for a 2.13 ERA while striking out 20 batters in a Golden Eagles uniform.
 
Matt O'Dair completes what may be his fifth and final year with the Golden Eagles as the school's single season batting average record holder when he hit .451 in 2021. His career stats include 79 hits in 238 at bats for a .332 batting average along with a total of 56 RBI's and 22 total hits by pitches (HBPP) in his career including 15 this season which rank him third for most HBP in a single season. His 22 HBP rank him tied for third most in program history. O' Dair still has one year left on eligibility remaining if he chooses to return due to the two additional COVID years all NCAA spring student-athletes received.
 
James Houlahan is a three year member of the Golden Eagles after playing two years at Westchester Community College where he was named to the All Region XV Team. Houlahan finishes this season after five years of collegiate baseball with 92 hits, 59 runs and 49 RBIs and a .377 batting average which would put him as the third highest batting average in program history. His 59 hits this season rank him third in program history for the most hits in a single season. Houlahan still has one year left on eligibility remaining if he chooses to return due to the two additional COVID years all NCAA spring student-athletes received.
 
Potential Senior Returners:
Along with Houlahan and O'Dair, Graduate Students Jake Sisto, Cooper Meldrim and Matthew Colucci, fifth year seniors Colin Coykendall, Andrew Huffman, Nicholas Pastore, Michael Spulnick and seniors Matthew Denatale, Ryan Mroczka, Adam Douglas, Matt McGowan, Zach Goldberg, Colin Pytlak, Ryan Mansell, Ryan Voight, and Justin Pangburn could all potentially return next year as fifth year seniors or graduate students.
 
All-Region/All-American:
With Tom Kretzler, Andrew Huffman, Matthew Colucci and Nicholas Pastore all named to the All-SUNYAC First team, The D3Baseball.com All-Region team is scheduled to be announced on Monday, May 30th with the All-American list to be named Wednesday, June 1st, but is subject to change.
