Naples, FL – The SUNY Brockport softball team went 0-2 on Sunday, continuing its trip in Florida at the Gene Cusic Classic. Brockport lost to Wilmington, 5-3, and Mitchell, 5-4, moving to 1-5 overall so far.
Brockport 3, Wilmington 5 – Game 1
Jodie Burdick went 2-for-3 at the plate, scoring one run herself and registering one RBI.
Jenna Downey also batted 2-for-3 in the game in the designated player slot.
Kellie Gentile,
Hailey Burdick, and
Caitlyn Dailey all were 1-for-3 in the first matchup on Sunday. Gentile and Burdick each scored one run, while Dailey was credited with one RBI.
Amanda Blakely earned an RBI, drawing a walk with the bases loaded in the seventh.
Making her second start for the Green and Gold,
Victoria Angelo (0-2) allowed five earned runs across 4.0 innings of action in the circle.
Roseland Stroh stepped in to pitch for the final 2.0 innings for the Golden Eagles without allowing any runs to score during her shift.
The Wilmington Quakers got on the board early with a base-clearing double, scoring two runs in the first inning. They would go on to add one more run in the second, taking a 3-0 lead. In the fourth, Wilmington added another pair of runs to make it a 5-0 advantage over Brockport.
After being held scoreless through six innings, the Golden Eagles flipped a switch and started to rally in the seventh.
Kellie Gentile got in scoring position with a 1-out double to left center.
Jodie Burdick singled to score Gentile, putting the team on the scoreboard to make the score 5-1.
Continuing the assault, both
Hailey Burdick and
Caitlyn Dailey hit singles, which brought J. Burdick in to score. Wilmington made a pitching change, which quickly led to the second out of the inning.
Jenna Downey hit a single that loaded the bases, as the Green and Gold trailed 5-2.
Amanda Blakely drew a walk in her at-bat, scoring another run. Brockport came up with three big runs in the seventh, but the comeback attempt would end there. The trio of runs in the final frame wasn't enough, as Wilmington held on for the 5-3 win.
Brockport 4, Mitchell 5 – Game 2
Kellie Gentile was 2-for-4 in the game two, with two RBIs, a run scored, and a stolen base. With just one hit in four tries,
Annie Dipirro came up big with two RBIs late in the game.
Erin Dougherty matched Gentile's 2-for-4 effort at the plate. The freshman catcher came around to touch home twice on the day.
Victoria Angelo batted 2-for-3 from the designated player spot.
After subbing into the game late,
Riley Barrett went 1-for-2 with one run scored.
Emma DeJesus singled in the seventh for her one hit in four at-bats.
Fiona Gibiser (L, 1-2) got the start in the circle for the Golden Eagles, ultimately receiving the losing decision. For her second time in a row she pitched the full 7.0 innings and only allowed two earned runs. She struck out five batters in the game, just one shy of tying her career-high.
The second game of the set on Sunday got off to a slow start offensively, as it turned into a pitchers' duel between
Fiona Gibiser and Mitchell's Emily Reynolds. The two in the circle kept the game scoreless through the first three innings.
Mitchell College struck first with a sac fly in the top of the fourth, going up 1-0. In the bottom of the fifth, Kellie Gentlie connected for a single that brought two runs in to score. Gentile's big hit gave Brockport a 2-1 lead going into the sixth.
In the final two innings, Mitchell was able to surge ahead 5-2. The team snuck a run in during the sixth and touched home plate three more times in the seventh. Once again Brockport looked to rally, this time getting last ups in the bottom of seven.
Both
Erin Dougherty and
Kellie Gentile were able to get in scoring position, attempting to spark a 2-out rally.
Annie Dipirro stepped in and launched a clutch, two-run single to score both Dougherty and Gentile. The Green and Gold was now down just one run with one out left to work with.
Emma DeJesus continued to hot streak with a single to left field, putting the tying run on second base. However, Mitchell escaped the dangerous situation with the final out of the game to seal the 5-4 win.
The Golden Eagles continue their run of games at North Collier Park in Naples, FL on Monday. They are set to play another pair beginning with William Paterson at 1pm and finishing with Rutgers-Newark at 3pm.
