Roanoke, VA – The SUNY Brockport Baseball team took a trip down south for a group of three games at Salem Memorial Ball Park in Roanoke, Virginia. Brockport fell, 8-2, on Saturday night against Roanoke College to start the busy weekend.
With the loss Brockport is now 0-3 to start the season.
Roanoke scored first bringing home a run in the bottom of the first.
Pat Bigham hit a double to left center in the bottom of the second.
Brian Tietjen lined out to second base and Bigham to advanced to third on a passed ball. He would be stranded on the third as the inning came to an end.
The field was quiet until the top of the fourth.
Johnny Genau earned a single after sending the ball into center field.
Nicholas Pastore singled right after, to advance Genau to second.
Zach Eldred walked allowing both Genau and Pastore to advance.
Brian Tietjen lined out into a double play, which allowed Roanoke to escape the inning before the Golden Eagles could send a man home.
Roanoke brought another two men home in the bottom of the fourth.
There was no action until the bottom of the sixth when Roanoke brought home three more runs to score. Brockport found itself trailing, 6-0.
In the top of the seventh,
Zach Eldred made it to first on a walk. While
Ryan Mansell was up to bat Eldred stole second, before Mansell popped to third base.
The top of the eighth began with a single to center field courtesy of
Jason Mansell. A double play by the Maroons was enough to end the Brockport's rally and start the bottom of the eighth.
Roanoke sent two more men home in the bottom of the eighth.
Brockport brought two men home in the top of the ninth to put an end to the shutout bid for Roanoke. The inning started out with a walk from Genau. Pastore send the ball into center field, earning a single as Genau advanced to second base. Eldred walked, making the bases loaded.
Brian Tietjen reached on a fielder's choice, sending Geanu and Pastore home on the error. There was no time to bring Eldred home when
Ryan Mansell grounded into a double play as Tietjen was also putout in the sequence.
The Golden Eagles will be back at Salem Memorial Ball Park tomorrow morning for a 10am game against Franklin and Marshall College, followed by a 2pm game against #15 Marietta College.
