Cortland, NY – The SUNY Brockport baseball team won, 12-2, Thursday against the Oneonta Red Dragons on the first day of the 2023 SUNYAC Conference Tournament.
Andrew Huffman got the start on the mound today for the Golden Eagles, going the full nine innings. Huffman only let up two runs and six hits across 30 at bats. With three strikeouts in the game, he becomes the program's all-time leader in career strikeouts with 178.
Ryan Mansell got the ball rolling for the Green and Gold with a double to center field in the bottom of the second inning.
Ryan Voight singled to center field and brought Mansell home for the first run of the game.
Brockport scored six runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a comfortable lead.
David Belsito started the avalanche with a single up the middle of the field.
Nicholas Pastore was hit by a pitch and Belsito advanced to second.
Zach Eldred singled through the right side, which put Pastore on third and brought home Belsito.
Patrick Bigham sacrificed to right field to score Pastore. Mansell was hit by a pitch and Eldred advanced to second. Voight singled up the middle bringing home Eldred.
Justin Pangburn was up to bat next and hit his first home run of the season to left center, bringing home both Mansell and Voight for the sixth and seventh runs of the game.
Oneonta scored one run in the top of the fourth trying to chip away at the lead. Brockport held Oneonta off by adding four more runs to the board in the bottom of the fifth. Eldred started the inning off with a walk and Bigham cleared the bases with home run down the left foul line. Pangburn was walked and Houlahan singled up the middle. With Pangburn now on third, Houlahan advanced to second when
Johnny Genau was hit by a pitch. Belsito doubled down the left foul line, bringing home Pangburn and Houlahan for runs ten and eleven.
The Red Dragons scored their final run in the top of the sixth inning, unable to close the gap in the last three innings left to play. Brockport put the final run of the 12-2 ball game on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning. Houlahan doubled down the right foul line and was brought home by Pastore's RBI single through the right-side.
Brockport will move onto day two on Friday, facing the other Red Dragons of SUNY Cortland. These two teams will face off at 12pm back on the field at SUNY Cortland.
