Baseball Comes Up Short on the Road Against Ithaca

Ithaca, NY – In a non-conference battle with Ithaca College on Tuesday, the SUNY Brockport baseball team fell short resulting in an 8-5 loss on the road. The team is now 23-14 overall on the season with just three games left to play before the postseason begins.

Nicholas Pastore went yard for his fourth home run of the season in the contest. He finished 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs. Zach Eldred went 3-for-5 on the day with one RBI, while Justin Pangburn and David Belsito both were 2-for-4 at the plate.

Andrew Huffman started on the mound for the Golden Eagles in this one, pitching 4.2 innings. He allowed just one earned run on three hits and struck out seven batters. Cooper Meldrim and Michael Heilig combined for 2.1 innings of work without giving up any runs. Justin DelVecchio (L, 1-2) received the loss after allowing four runs in one inning of action.

While the Bombers got on the board first with an RBI double in the third, Brockport was ready to answer in the fourth. Ryan Mansell tied the game up at 1-1 with an RBI single to left which scored Eldred. Ithaca responded quickly with a run in the fifth to go back up by one.

Belsito and Pastore gave the Golden Eagles the lead for the first time in the game in the top of the seventh. Belsito's RBI single scored Josh Indek, which tied the game up at 2-2. Soon after, Pastore brought Belsito home with his 2-run homer to put Brockport up 4-2.

Once again, Ithaca was able to match the scoring effort of the Green and Gold. The home team tied the game up at 4-4 in the bottom half of the seventh with a pair of runs. In the eighth. the Bombers had a big 4-run inning to jump out to a comfortable, 8-4, advantage.

In the top of the ninth, Brockport needed a rally to spark a comeback. Zach Eldred brought Pangburn home with an RBI single to cut the deficit to just three runs. However that is as far as the comeback attempt would go for the Green and Gold. Ithaca hung on for the 8-5 victory at home.

The Golden Eagles will close out the regular season at home this weekend with a 3-game series against Oswego State. Game one will be at 3pm on Friday, with Saturday's doubleheader beginning at 12pm as Brockport hosts its Hometown Heroes event.
