Wheat Gets 1st Career Win as Head Coach, Brockport Splits on Sunday

Clermont, FL – On Sunday the Golden Eagle softball team split the pair of games in Florida. Brockport defeated Keuka, 10-2, for the first win of the season before falling to The College at Old Westbury, 8-0.

Head Coach Mary Karen Wheat earned the first win of her career at Brockport on the day. The squad moved to 1-3 overall following the second day of games down south.

Game 1: Brockport 10, Keuka 2

Against the Keuka College Wolves, freshman Kendall Phillips (W, 1-1) found her rhythm in the circle with a strong performance. She doubled her strikeout total from her debut outing yesterday, sitting down 12 batters on her own with no runs allowed in 4.2 innings of work. She only gave up one hit on the way to the first win of her collegiate career.

The Wolves took an early lead with a pair of runs through the first two innings to hold a 2-0 lead. Brockport then shut down Keuka for the rest of the game and took control in the third.

A 6-run inning in the bottom of the third got started with a leadoff double from Caitlyn Dailey, who went 2-for-3 at the plate in the game. Erin Dougherty put the ball in play soon after with a bunt for a single. A throwing error from Keuka on the play allowed Dailey to score and moved Dougherty over to third.

Kellie Gentile then followed suit with a bunt for a single, which scored Dougherty from third base to tie the game up at 2-2. Emma DeJesus stepped to the plate next, knocking in Gentile to give Brockport a 3-2 lead.

Later in the same inning with runners on first and second, Olivia Simone connected for a 2-RBI double. Simone finished the play at third base, after Keuka tried to get an out at home. Now with a 5-2 lead, Danielle Wenzek sent Simone home for an RBI to make it a 6-2 game heading into the next inning.

Another run was added to the scoreboard for the Green and Gold after DeJesus scored from third on a wild pitch. The senior finished 2-for-4 in the game with three runs, one RBI, and a stolen base.

In the sixth inning, the Golden Eagles put the game away with three more runs to bring the mercy-rule into play. Another throwing error from the Wolves brought another run in for Brockport to make the score 8-2.

It was Wenzek who put the final nail in the coffin. With runners in scoring position she hit a 2-RBI single to center field, creating the final score of 10-2. Wenzek went 1-for-3 in the game with three RBIs. Simone also had multiple RBIs, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs, two runs, and two doubles.

Game 2: Brockport 0, Old Westbury 8

The second game of the day saw the Old Westbury Panthers go up big early, leading from start to finish. They scored five runs in the first inning and added three more in the second to craft an 8-0 lead.

Layla Ramos (W, 3-0) pitched great for the Panthers, going the full 5.0 innings without allowing any runs. Fiona Gibiser (L, 0-2) started in the circle for Brockport, with Kendall Phillips and Rose Stroh both stepping in to pitch as well in the contest.

Brockport got hits from three different players in the loss. Riley Barrett (1-2), Olivia Simone (1-2), and Natalie Faas (1-1) all reached base safely with singles. Emma DeJesus also got on base after getting hit by a pitch, which set up her stolen base in the first inning.

The Golden Eagles have Monday off to rest up for the remaining six games scheduled for the Florida trip. They return to the field Tuesday, March 19th for games against Framingham State (11:15am) and Knox College (1:30pm).
