Brockport, NY – On Saturday, the Brockport softball team concluded the 2024 season at home against New Paltz, dropping both games of the doubleheader by scores of 2-1 and 2-0. The Golden Eagles finish the year 8-28 overall and 2-16 in the conference.
It was Dumaw Day and Senior Day at the Clark V. Whited Complex, as the program celebrated the two occasions. Prior to the game, retired Head Coach John Dumaw was honored for his 20+ years of work at Brockport. Then following both games, the Golden Eagles took time to celebrate seniors
Tori Angelo,
Emma DeJesus, and
Rose Stroh.
Game 1: Brockport 1, New Paltz 2
Getting the start in game one on Senior Day,
Rose Stroh (L, 0-6) went the full 7.0 innings for a complete game. She had a strong outing in the circle, allowing just two earned runs on five hits to go with five strikeouts.
Kellie Gentile was effective offensively for the Green and Gold. She was 2-for-3 at the plate, with two stolen bases and one run scored.
Olivia Simone went 1-for-3 and registered the lone RBI for Brockport in the contest.
Aubrey Ennis was 1-for-3, connecting for the team's only other hit.
After both pitchers held the bats in check for the first four innings, New Paltz would open up the scoring in the top of the fifth. The Hawks went up 1-0 before adding a second run in the seventh for a 2-0 lead.
Looking to start a rally in the bottom of seven, Gentile singled and quickly moved to second by swiping the bag. After going to third on a passed ball, she would come in to score off an RBI single from Simone. Back-to-back line outs cut the rally short, giving New Paltz the 2-1 win to start the doubleheader.
Game 2: Brockport 0, New Paltz 2
The second go around of the day was yet another defensive battle, as runs and hits were hard to come by. While
Tori Angelo started at pitcher to celebrate Senior Day, it was
Fiona Gibiser (L, 0-8) that pitched most the game for Brockport.
Gibiser went 4.1 innings, allowing just two earned runs on five hits.
Kendall Phillips came in to pitch the final 2.0 innings during her shift. She allowed no runs and just one hit while in the circle on Saturday.
Once again, it was
Kellie Gentile's bat looking to provide a spark for the Golden Eagles. She went 2-for-3 in game two with another stolen base, finishing the day 4-for-6 with three swipes. Celebrating her Senior Day,
Emma DeJesus went 1-for-3 in game two to give the team its third hit.
The visiting Hawks were able to score one run in the third inning to take a 1-0 lead midway through the contest. They added a second run in the fifth to go up 2-0 just like in the first game of the set. New Paltz was able to prevent any late shots for Brockpor to rally, walking away with the 2-run victory in game two.
The Golden Eagles' season has now come to a close, with Head Coach
Mary Karen Wheat's first season at the helm in the books.
