Brockport, NY- The #12 Brockport baseball team is heading to the Empire 8 Championship, defeating two seed Russell Sage, 1-0, on day two of the Empire 8 Championship Weekend on Friday, May 9
th from the Clark V. Whited Complex.
The Golden Eagles earned their 35
th win of the season, setting a new program record for victories in a single season. Brockport's 1-0 win over Russell Sage marked the lowest scoring game in Empire 8 Playoff history.
Anthony Lapine was untouchable on the mound for Brockport, tossing a complete game shutout with eight strikeouts. Now holding a 9-0 record, Lapine allowed just four baserunners across a flawless nine innings of work.
Victor Alongi's RBI single in the second inning served as the game winner, driving in
Jason Story for the lone run of the afternoon.
Jason Story reached base safely three times, going 1-for-1 with a run scored and two hit by pitches.
With Russell Sage threating in the sixth inning, Lapine skated through a two-baserunner jam to keep Brockport ahead 1-0.
With over 100 pitches on the day, Lapine forced three Russell Sage groundouts in the ninth to send Brockport to the Empire 8 Championship. Â
In his final season as head coach of the Golden Eagles,
Justin Beach has guided Brockport to a program best overall record of 35-3-2 and 21-1-1 conference mark. Â
