BROCKPORT, NY - The Brockport men's soccer team (5-3-2, 4-0-1 E8) defeated Russell Sage (4-4-4, 1-2-2 E8), 3-2, in a Senior Day matchup on Saturday, October 3rd. The Golden Eagles rode a 21-5 edge in the shots department to maintain an undefeated conference record.
Before the start of the contest, Brockport honored seniors
Jadin Lyle,
Trevor Lagarde,
Matthew Sandison, and
Keegan Watson.
Brockport wasted no time jumping ahead, with a
Trevor Lagarde free kick leading to the first of two
Ryan Mathis goals. Mathis put Brockport ahead 1-0 3:32 into the first half, with assists going to Lagarde and
Khadim Amar. Russell Sage would respond quickly, scoring a goal on the Gators' first shot on goal at the 19:29 mark of the first half. Mathis would create a trio of scoring chances late in the half, but Russell Sage would keep Brockport off the scoreboard to go into halftime tied 1-1.
The Golden Eagles offense struck quickly in the second half, with
Finn Sullivan putting Brockport up 2-1 just 6:07 into the second half. Despite losing the time-of-possession battle, Russell Sage's Anthony Geis penalty kick in the 71st minute would tie the game at 2-2.
In the 82nd minute,
Ryan Mathis would strike again to secure the game-winning goal for Brockport. Following a saved penalty shot, Mathis buried his own rebound for an unassisted goal, putting Brockport up 3-2 with less than eight minutes remaining.
Russell Sage pressured the Golden Eagles late in the second half, with
AJ Nelson coming up huge with a save late to secure the senior day victory. Nelson (W, 5-3-1) made two saves in the winning effort, posting a 4-0-1 record across his last five starts.
Ryan Mathis led all shooters with 10 shots (7 SOG), burying two goals to move his season total to seven goals.
Parker Warren,
Finn Sullivan,
Trevor Lagarde, and
Max Maouris all played 90 minutes for the Green and Gold in strong individual efforts.
