CANTON, OH - The #23-ranked Brockport Baseball team came up short in a pair of high-scoring outings from Canton, OH on Friday, February 20th. The Golden Eagles fell to 0-2 following Friday's action.
RV Adrian College 15 / #23 Brockport 9
After a scoreless first inning, Adrian would jump ahead 4-0 entering the bottom of the second inning. The Bulldogs would ride a three-run homer to kickstart the game's scoring. In the bottom of the inning, the Brockport offense would strike back.
Transfer junior
Evan Brock would smash a solo home run to left field to get Brockport on the scoreboard, with a
Matthew Coon double scoring
Matt Mayer to cut Adrian's advantage to 4-2.
The Bulldogs would take a 10-2 lead into the bottom of the fourth, smashing two more homers in the inning to punctuate a six-run top of the fourth. Brockport would continue to fight, with
Matthew Coon lacing a two-run single and a
Kyle Blake RBI single, cutting the lead to 10-5.
Despite strong offensive play throughout, Brockport would be unable to claw back, with the Bulldogs adding five insurance runs to sink the Brockport comeback bid.
Michael Norton was excellent from the designated hitter spot, finishing two-for-five with three RBI's and a home run in a strong Brockport debut.
Kyle Blake (2-5) and
Cole Grazioplene (2-4) each provided two hits for Brockport, with Blake driving in two runs.
RV Mount Union 26 / #23 Brockport 17
The Golden Eagles started strong, with
Michael Norton building off a strong game one. Norton would smack a two-run double, scoring
Evan Brock and
Cole Grazioplene. Mount Union would answer quickly, scoring five runs in the bottom of the second to take a three-run lead (5-2).
Brockport would stay hot offensively, with Norton driving home another run before
Cole Grazioplene's passed ball run scored would cut the deficit to one (5-4).
Despite a big Purple Raiders' bottom of the fourth, the Golden Eagles would jump in front at the top of the sixth. After RBI knocks from
Blake Fortunato,
Josh Indek, and
Kyle Blake,
Evan Brock would swing the contest in Brockport's favor. Brock would launch a three-run homer to put Brockport up 11-8.
The Golden Eagle lead would be short-lived, seeing Mount Union plate 11 runs in the bottom of the sixth to jump ahead 19-11 entering the seventh inning.
Despite a six-run top of the ninth, 18 Purple Raider runs between the sixth and eighth innings would end Brockport's comeback bid.
Kyle Blake and
Michael Norton each provided big game twos, adding four RBI and two runs scored each.
Cole Grazioplene led the Golden Eagles with three runs scored, finishing two-for-six with a walk.
Despite jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning and holding an 11-8 edge entering the bottom of the sixth, the Golden Eagles would finish on the short end of a slug fest from Munson Stadium.
