Softball Home Opener Spoiled By Buffalo State

Brockport, NY – Monday was the home opener for the Brockport softball team at the Clark V. Whited Complex. The visiting Buffalo State Bengals spoiled the day, taking both games of the doubleheader.

Brockport 1, Buffalo St. 10 – Game 1 Final

After a pair of scoreless innings to start the day, Buffalo State blew the game open with 10 runs in the top of the third. Brockport was able to get one on the board in the fifth to avoid the shutout. Erin Dougherty led off the inning with a walk. A sacrifice bunt from Julia Hill and then a sacrifice fly from Caitlyn Dailey brought Dougherty home.

Makenna Hart (L, 0-3) got the start and had two strikeouts in 2.0 innings. Liana DeValder threw well in relief, going 3.0 innings with five strikeouts. At the plate, Brockport's lone hit in the contest was a double from Paige Wentland (1-2).

Brockport 4, Buffalo St. 5 – Game 2 Final

The second-leg of the doubleheader was a much closer contest, needing an extra inning to decide a winner. Buffalo State took a quick 2-0 lead in the first, but Brockport bounced back in the third.

With a pair of runners in scoring position, Julia Hill connect for a hit to score both Lila Lovgren and Isabella Moya. The very next at-bat, Caitlyn Dailey brought Hill home to score on an RBI single. Brockport held a 3-2 lead until the Bengals found more offense in the fifth. They scored two more runs to go up 4-3 over the Golden Eagles.

Brockport quickly answered in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game up at 4-4. Erin Dougherty drew a walk, stole second, and quickly moved to third on a pass ball. Julia Hill was credited with her third RBI of the game, helping bring Dougherty in to score the game-tying run.

With neither team surrendering a run through the seventh inning, the game moved to the eighth inning for some extra softball. Starting with a runner on second in the top of the eighth, the Bengals were able to break the tie for a 5-4 lead. Brockport came up short looking to answer in the bottom half of the inning.

The Golden Eagles move to 4-8 overall following the pair of non-conference losses in their home opening series. They play yet another non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday at Oswego. Game one on the road is scheduled for a 3pm start.
