ONEONTA, NY – The Brockport flag football team (7-3, 6-2 E8) completed a season sweep of Hartwick (4-5, 3-4 E8) on Saturday, finishing regular season play with a hard-fought 27-25 victory at Wright Stadium. The Golden Eagles have clinched the #2 seed in the Empire 8 Conference Tournament.
Megan Gerber and
Madison Beardsley split time under center, leading an offense that combined for 205 yards through the air and two passing touchdowns. Gerber was a force on the ground, leading all runners with 137 rushing yards on 16 carries and two rushing touchdowns. Beardsley also delivered a solid performance, completing 12 passes for 96 yards, including a 10-yard touchdown strike.
Addy VanDeWater served as the primary deep threat in the passing game, hauling in six catches for 82 yards and both of Brockport's receiving touchdowns.
Trelani Harper contributed four receptions for 46 yards, while
Ariana Kennedy and
Caitlynn Haugh combined for 36 receiving yards to help keep the chains moving.
Defensively,
Ariana Kennedy led the team with 10 flag pulls and a sack.
Lauren Cundra made a significant impact in the secondary, totaling eight flag pulls, two pass breakups, and a crucial interception.
Cymbri Jefferson and
Jaianna Byrd were also key contributors to the defensive effort, recording eight and seven flag pulls, respectively.
The first half saw the Hawks jump out to an early lead, as Hartwick found the end zone twice in the opening quarter to take a 12-0 advantage. Both teams traded scores in the second frame, leaving Brockport trailing 19-7 at the half. The Golden Eagles seized control in the third quarter, holding the Hawks scoreless while adding 13 points of their own to take a one-point lead. Brockport's defense held firm in the fourth quarter, allowing just one touchdown to secure the two-point win.
Megan Gerber was a major factor on both sides of the ball, totaling three flag pulls and a sack for a loss of seven yards in addition to her heavy offensive workload.
Analysia Sosa also contributed to the defensive stand with three flag pulls.
Up Next: The Golden Eagles will host the first round of the Empire 8 Tournament on Tuesday, April 21st. The kickoff time and opponent have yet to be determined.
