Horseheads, NY - The Brockport Baseball team (11-13, 7-0 E8) completed a three-game sweep of Elmira (9-10, 1-8 E8), defeating the Soaring Eagles in doubleheader action, 13-2 and 22-7, on Saturday, April 4th. Extending their winning streak to nine games, the Golden Eagles rode a potent offensive attack and strong starting pitching to maintain an undefeated record in conference play.
Game One: Brockport 13 - Elmira 2 (8 Innings)
Tyler Pohlman (W, 2-2) provided the foundation with a dominant start, providing six innings of one-run baseball (O ER), punching out seven Soaring Eagles. The junior from Orchard Park, NY, has found his groove on the bump, allowing just four earned runs across his last 19.1 IP (1.86 ERA) and collecting 15 strikeouts.
Cole Grazioplene was excellent in his return to center field, providing a three-hit effort with a home run, two runs scored, and an RBI.
Matthew Coon continued his incredible run at the plate, launching his third home run in two days and finishing two-for-four with three runs scored and two RBI's. Coon has been one of the toughest outs in the country across his 13-game hitting streak, going 21-for-47 (.446) with 17 RBI's, 16 runs, and five home runs since March 15th.
Michael Norton reached base four times in game one, going a perfect three-for-three (BB, SB) with two RBI's and a run scored.
Brockport's offense would prove to be red-hot from the get-go, scoring eight runs in the first and chasing the Elmira starter Plummer out of the game.
Blake Fortunato opened the scoring with an RBI double before
James Dixon would score two Golden Eagles with a single to jump ahead 3-0. After an
Evan Brock sacrifice fly,
Matt Mayer would clear the bases with his third home run of the season, bringing in three runs and putting Brockport up 8-0 entering the bottom of the first.
Up 8-1 following an Elmira run in the first, Fortunato would bring home Mayer with an RBI groundout in the third inning, putting Brockport back up by eight runs (9-1). The Golden Eagles would increase their lead to double figures with a three-run fifth inning, highlighted by Grazioplene's home run and RBI knocks from Coon and Norton. Coon would cause additional damage in the seventh, connecting with the first pitch for a solo homer, scoring Brockport's 13th and final run of game one.
James Dixon finished as one of three Golden Eagles with three hits in game one, collecting two RBI's and a run scored. Dixon has been Brockport's most constant bat thus far, leading the squad with 35 hits and a .385 batting average.
Matt Mayer provided a big game one, launching a home run and finishing two-for-four with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Game Two: Brockport 22 - Elmira 7 (8 Innings)
The Brockport offense provided a historic hitting performance in game two, posting the most runs in a single game since 2021 (23, Vs. Cazenovia), and the most hits in a single game in over 15 seasons.
Evan Brock provided one of the top hitting performances of the season, driving in eight runs and finishing four-for-six with three runs scored and two home runs. Brock's big outing moved him into a tie with
Matthew Coon with a team-leading five home runs.
James Dixon was nearly just as dominant, racking up four hits (4-5) with five RBI's and four runs scored. The Clifton Park, NY native finished with seven hits and seven RBI's in an outstanding performance in the doubleheader.
Michael Norton was one of three Golden Eagles with four hits in game two, finishing four-for-five with two extra base hits (2B, HR). The graduate transfer was nearly perfect across the doubleheader, finishing with a .875 batting average (7-8), three RBI's, and three runs scored.
Norton wasted little time getting Brockport on the scoreboard, sending the first pitch he saw over the fence to give Brockport an early 1-0 lead. The Golden Eagles would plate six runs in the top of the first, with
Cooper Hassall and
James Dixon lacing RBI singles to stretch the Brockport lead to 3-0. The Green and Gold were far from finished, seeing
Evan Brock connect for a three-run homer to double Brockport's lead to 6-0.
Following a scoreless first inning from
Charles Searle, the Golden Eagles would run away early, scoring five more runs in the second inning. Dixon (2 RBI) and Brock (2 RBI) would provide run-scoring singles, with
Kyle Blake scoring Brock with a RBI double to go up 11-0. Despite an Elmira run in the bottom of the inning,
Josh Indek would score in the third to put Brockport back up by 11.
Following a three-run inning from Elmira (12-4), the Brockport offense was unfazed, scoring in each of the first seven innings, including 10 runs between the fourth and seventh innings. After launching a solo home run in the fourth inning,
Evan Brock would open the scoring in the fifth inning. After Brock's RBI knock, Blake,
Erik Gersfeld, Dixon,
William Coreno, and
Matt Mayer would all provide RBIs to balloon Brockport's lead to 20-5.
Nick Mahar would drive in a run in the seventh with an RBI single, and
Ryan Leniec would score on an error for Brockport's 22nd and final tally. Despite launching a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh,
Brendan Pajak would secure the final out in the eighth inning for the 15-run victory.
Bryce Tyndell (W, 1-2) picked up the win out of the bullpen, striking out two Soaring Eagles over 1.2 IP and allowing just one run (Unearned).
Tyler Arno and
Connor Furst (2 SO) each provided a scoreless inning out of the bullpen for Brockport.
Matthew Coon would extend his hitting streak in game two, reaching base four times and finishing two-for-four (2BB) with three runs scored.
