Marty Vajen was hired as Brockport's first full-time assistant cross country/track & field coach in the Summer of 2023. Vajen will report to Head Track & Field Coach Ed Jaskulski, and his duties will include overseeing the sprints group for the track & field team while also assisting John Davis with the cross country program.
Vajen has been a driving force behind the continued success of the SUNY Brockport Track & Field program, bringing high-level expertise in sprints, hurdles, relays, and jumps. In just two seasons (2023–24 and 2024–25), Vajen has helped guide Brockport athletes to historic achievements both regionally and nationally.

Across both seasons, Coach Vajen has coached athletes to 61 new top-10 performances in program history, helping elevate Brockport's profile on the national stage.
Coach Vajen holds certifications from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) in Sprints/Hurdles/Relays, Jumps, and Strength and Conditioning, underscoring his technical knowledge and commitment to athlete development.
His continued impact has made him an integral part of the Brockport coaching staff and a key figure in the program’s rise in NCAA Division III track and field.
Vajen recently completed a five-year stint as an assistant coach of the track & field and cross country programs at Washington & Jefferson College in Washington, Pa. He was named the 2023 Mid-Atlantic Region Indoor Track & Field Assistant Coach of the Year with the Presidents. He also earned W&J Assistant Coach of the Year honors.
During his time at W&J, he coached two outdoor national qualifiers, four All-Mid-Atlantic Region athletes, 14 individual PAC Champions, 34 All-Conference athletes and one cross country All-American. He also helped the President’s win the 2023 PAC Indoor Team title as well as the 2018 PAC men’s cross country team championship.
Before W&J, he was a graduate assistant with the Muskingum University cross country and track & field teams for two years in New Concord, Ohio. During his time at Muskingum, he created personalized training plans for jumpers and hurdlers while also leading advisory meetings and tracking academic progress for 50+ student-athletes.
Other duties at Brockport will include on-track instruction for practices and meets, student-athlete and team development, academic monitoring, meeting strategies, recruitment and retention of qualified student-athletes, meet management, budget management and team travel.
Before becoming a coach, Vajen was a standout on the Muskingum track team. With success on the track and in the classroom, the Lancaster, Ohio, native was named to the Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Team.
While at Muskingum, Martin earned a master’s degree in Adult Education in May of 2018 and a bachelor’s degree in Biology in May of 2016. He currently resides in the Brockport area.
