Makayla Curtis

Makayla Curtis was hired as an assistant coach for the Brockport’s gymnastics program in the Fall of 2023.  Curtis will assist Brockport Head Coach Rene Lyst with all aspects of the varsity gymnastics program.

She comes to Brockport from Greenville University in Illinois where she helped build the men’s and women’s gymnastics programs from the ground up in 2022-23.  During her season at Greenville, she was responsible for coaching the women’s Beam and Floor and helped the Panthers earn their first victory in program-history.

Prior to her time as a coach, she spent five years as a Division I gymnasts at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Curtis worked her way into a scholarship and a top/consistent contender with the Huskers. She competed at the Big 10 championships in her final two seasons at Nebraska.

Her career high marks at Nebraska included - Vault: 9.875 (at Big Ten Championships, 3/20/21), Beam: 9.950 (vs. Iowa, 3/14/21), Floor: 9.900 (vs. Iowa, 3/14/21)

Her honors and awards included the Nebraska Academic Medallion (Bronze, 2020, 2021), the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll (Fall 2019; Spring 2019, 2020), the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team (2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022), the J.O. National Championships Qualifier (2015, 2016).

Prior to her time at Nebraska, Curtis trained at Summit Gymnastics in Savannah, Ga., under Shelley Davis and Dave Anderson. A two-time J.O. National Championships qualifier, Curtis tied for 12th on floor at the 2016 national meet. A talented vaulter, Curtis finished second on the event at the 2017 Georgia State Championships and third at the 2017 Region 8 Championships. At the 2016 Region 8 Championships, she notched a second-place finish on vault, a fifth-place finish on floor and a sixth-place finish in the all-around. She tied for third on both vault and beam at the 2016 Georgia State Championships. She graduated from Islands High School in 2017.

The daughter of Melissa and Clark Curtis, Makayla was born on Jan. 29, 1999. Makayla has an older brother, Hunter, and a younger brother, Christian. She was a sports media and communication major and earned her bachelor's degree from Nebraska in May of 2022.
