Sean Buckley ’17 was hired as an athletic trainer for the Golden Eagles in January of 2025. Buckley provides coverage for the Brockport athletic training clinic, home practices and contests, away contests as assigned, and supervision of athletic training students. He works closely with Brockport’s 23 varsity sports and nearly 800 student-athletes.
Other duties include injury prevention, evaluation, management, and treatment of student-athlete injuries as well as short-term and long-term rehabilitation. His primary sport coverage includes gymnastics, outdoor track & field, softball and field hockey.
Buckley returned to his alma mater after spending five and a half years as a certified athletic trainer at nearby Nazareth University. His duties at Nazareth included scheduling physician appointments for student-athletes and communicating regularly with the team physician regarding diagnoses and follow up procedures. Buckley helped to introduce innovative rehabilitation techniques to manage ligamentous injuries and he also coordinated ambulance and physician coverage for men’s and women’s ice hockey contests, as well as rugby matches.
While at Nazareth he also recorded inventory at the end of each semester and prepared order lists for the athletic director, while updating emergency action plans for the off-campus ice hockey rink. He also helped create an emergency action plan for new Nazareth’s newest facility, the Golisano Training Center. Buckley assisted in educating coaches and game day management staff on the handling of emergent injuries. He also served as a preceptor for athletic training students in SUNY Brockport’s professional athletic training program.
Prior to Nazareth, he spent nearly two years as a certified athletic trainer at Hocking College on Ohio where he designed and implemented multiple long-term post-surgical rehabilitations and applied return to play protocols at college. He also spent four months as the interim athletic trainer at Berne Union High School in Ohio. While at Berne Union, in a short period of time he was able to create trusting and effective relationships with coaches, administrators and student-athletes.
During his graduate work at Ohio University, he developed his research experience and was part of a team that secured a United States Department of Defense grant to explore ACL injuries amongst military personnel and improve return to combat rehabilitation procedures. He also collaborated with professors and fellow classmates to perform pilot testing, create methods, recruit participants, and collect data. He was responsible for researching, acquiring, and testing equipment necessary to complete data collection. He also became proficient in SPSS software to obtain and interpret statistical findings from research data.
Buckley graduated from SUNY Brockport in 2017 with a bachelor’s degree in athletic training (CAATE Accredited Program) & Kinesiology. He went on to earn his master’s in athletic training from Ohio University in 2019.
Buckley is currently a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association, and he also has his New York State Athletic Training License as well as his American Heart Association Basic Life Support CPR/AED certification.
