Junior Eric Malave (Brooklyn, NY/Canarsie) has been named The College at Brockport Male Athlete of the Week after leading the football team to a season opening victory over Oberlin College. Malave is the award winner for the week ending September 8 as he broke the school record for receptions in one game with 13 in the 45-10 win over the Yeoman.

Malave led all receivers with 13 catches for 131 yards and a touchdown. After Oberlin took the lead with a touchdown in the first quarter, Brockport answered right back. Malave capped off the drive with a 34 yard touchdown catch. He took a short pass from the quarterback, broke the tackle of the single coverage man and used a downfield block to score the game tying touchdown.

With nine catches in the first half, Malave broke the record with time to spare as he caught the record breaking pass with more than three minutes remaining in the third quarter. The Golden Eagles star receiver is no stranger to big plays as he took home the award for GEICO Play of the Year for a tremendous diving sidelines grab he had last year.

Brockport football returns to action this Saturday at 12 pm when they square off against the Red Dragons at Cortland. The ensuing weekend, on September 20, will be the Golden Eagle’s homecoming game at 6 pm against St. John Fisher College in the Courage Bowl. All proceeds go to Camp Good Days.
