Sophomore Sarah Alwardt (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) scored a career-high 23 points on 10 of 15 shooting, but The College at Brockport's women's basketball team fell to Buffalo State 55-50 Tuesday night inside the Buffalo State Sports Arena.
Alwardt made a basket to draw Brockport (4-12 overall, 2-7 SUNYAC) within 51-47, but Buffalo State (9-6, 4-5 SUNYAC) hit a pair of free throws to extend its lead to 53-47. Freshman Alex Leung (Merrick, NY/W.C. Mepham) made both her free throws and Alwardt added a free throw as the Golden Eagles got within three, 53-50, but Brockport missed a three-pointer that could have tied it with 10 seconds left. Buffalo Sate hit a pair of free throws to push the lead to 55-50 and the Golden Eagles couldn't draw any closer.
The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as five points in the first half, but Alwardt scored 12 first-half points as Brockport led 28-27 at halftime,
Alwardt continued her hot streak to start the second half. She made three consecutive layups, including a basket 3:24 into the second half to give Brockport a 34-30 lead, its largest lead of the game.
But the Bengals answered back with a 21-9 run to take a 51-43 lead with 4:32 remaining, the largest lead held by any team.
Alwardt finished with 12 rebounds for her second straight double-double, and third in the 2010-11 season. Freshman Myranda Hogan (Corning, NY/Corning West) grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds while junior Rachel Csakany (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady) added nine rebounds for Brockport, which outrebounded the Bengals 52-39.
The Golden Eagles return to action Friday night, hosting first-place Geneseo (14-2, 9-0 SUNYAC) at 6 p.m. Friday night inside the Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium.
