Sophomore
Ellen Story (Catskill, NY/Catskill) achieved her first career double-double and The College at Brockport's women's basketball team hung tough with Geneseo, the top team in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC), but it wasn't enough as the Golden Eagles fell 61-52 Friday night inside the Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium.
Story scored 14 points and her 10 rebounds were a career high, and all of them came on the defensive glass for the Golden Eagles (4-13 overall, 2-8 SUNYAC). Story's previous high was eight rebounds on Jan. 15 against New Paltz.
Freshman
Kristin Wegrzyn (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) scored a career-high 12 points, connecting on 4 of 7 three-pointers against Geneseo (15-2, 10-0 SUNYAC). It was just Wegrzyn's second game of the season, and she logged 22 minutes for Brockport.
Brockport opened the scoring on their first offensive possession as freshman
Alex Leung (Merrick, NY/W.C. Mepham) hit a '3' to give Brockport a 3-0 lead. Brockport led 5-2 before Geneseo answered with a 10-0 run to take a 12-5 lead with 15:47 remaining in the first half.
The Blue Knights would lead 24-16 before Brockport pulled within one on a Wegrzyn three-pointer. The Golden Eagles weren't done, as sophomore
Sarah Alwardt (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) made a layup to give Brockport a 31-30 halftime lead. Brockport made 52 percent of its shots in the first half, compared to Geneseo, which shot 38.7 percent from the field.
Junior
Rachel Csakany (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady) scored four points in the first five minutes of the second half to raise Brockport's lead to 39-36 with 15:32 remaining.
Geneseo took the lead for good at the 4:28 mark of the second half with a three-pointer, and the Blue Knights hit six of their last 10 free throws down the stretch to pull away.
Alwardt, Brockport's leading rebounder, finished the game with nine rebounds while Leung added 8 points, a career-high 7 assists and 4 rebounds.
The Golden Eagles are next in action at 6 p.m. Tuesday night, when Brockport hosts Fredonia inside the Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium. Brockport is looking to sweep the season-series with Fredonia, as the Golden Eagles previously defeated Fredonia 62-58 on Jan. 18.
