BOXSCORE
Junior Kaila Maguire (Potsdam, NY/Potsdam) scored a first-half goal to give The College at Brockport Women's Soccer team a 1-0 lead but Cortland came back with three goals in the second half and won a 3-1 decision in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game Friday afternoon on A. Huntley Parker Jr. Field in Brockport.
The Golden Eagles (7-5-1 Overall, 2-4 SUNYAC) took the early lead in the 13th minutes when freshman Maria Malone (Ballston Lake, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) headed a long crossing pass from senior Sarah Petrie (Oswego, NY/Oswego) past the Cortland goalkeeper where Maguire picked up the loose ball and tapped it into the corner of the goal.
In the second half, Cortland (9-4-1, 6-1) recovered and scored eight minutes into the period to tie the game and took the lead 10 minutes later. The first goal was off a long crossing pass that was headed in over the hands of Brockport goalkeeper Erin Asquith (Arcade, NY/Pioneer). Ten minutes later another crossing pass was converted into a goal for the 2-1 lead.
A long shot with 19 minutes remaining in the half slipped past Asquith for the 3-1 Cortland lead and the Red Dragons held on late as Brockport applied some late pressure but could not hit the back of the net.
“I was happy the way we came out and played in the first half against a very good Cortland team,” said head coach Joan Schockow. “We just needed to play like that in the second half too. We need to find a way to sustain the good play for the whole 90 minutes.”
Statistically, the game was even with Cortland taking 13 shots to Brockport's 12 and each goalkeeper coming up with six saves.
