Football Scores 43 Points in Losing Effort

Brockport falls to Cortland despite strong running game

Jake Spalik caught five passes for 111 yards against Cortland
BOXSCORE

Freshman quarterback Dylan Umbra (Sidney, NY/Sidney) replaced injured starter Joe Scibilia (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) and led The College at Brockport Football team with 128 yards rushing and three touchdowns but the strong effort was not enough as Cortland posted a 64-43 victory Saturday in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Bob Boozer Field at Eunice Kennedy Shriver Stadium in Brockport.

Brockport (2-7 Overall, 2-6 NJAC) took the early lead as Scibilia tossed a 20-yard TD pass to Jordan Hogan (Lockport, NY/Newfane) less than four minutes into the game for a 7-0 lead.

Cortland (7-2, 7-2) wasted little time responding scoring on its second play of the next possession with a 42-yard run and then intercepted a pass and returned it for a score 40 seconds later and held a 13-7 advantage with 10:02 left to play in the first quarter.

The Golden Eagles pulled ahead on a 78-yard TD scoring pass and catch from Scibilia to sophomore Jake Spalik (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) midway through the quarter. Cortland scored on an eight-play drive later in the quarter and led 20-14 after the first 15 minutes of action.

The Red Dragon added to the lead in the second quarter capping an eight-play, 80-yard drive with a one-yard scoring pass but Brockport trimmed the lead with a 21-yard field goal by junior Bobby Giambra (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East) and a four-yard scoring run by Umbra late in the first half. Cortland took a 27-24 lead into the halftime intermission.

In the third quarter, Cortland scored on each of its four possessions and at the same time kept Brockport out of the end zone stretching the lead to 55-24 after three quarters of play.

The Red Dragons added to the lead in the start of the fourth quarter capping a 12-play, 93-yard drive with a one-yard plunge to take a 62-24 lead.

Umbra led the Golden Eagles to three scores in the final 3:51 of the game. He opened the scoring burst with a 32-yard TD run to cap an eight-play drive and then after a successful onsides kick, threw a 14-yard scoring pass to Spalik on the front corner of the end zone.

The extra point attempt was blocked and returned for a defensive two-point conversion before Brockport scored one last time with an Umbra one-yard run with 17 seconds left in the fourth quarter for the final score.

Umbra finished with a team-leading 128 yards on the ground with three touchdowns and also threw for another 172 yards on 10-for-19 passing and one more touchdown. Spalik led the Brockport receivers with 111 yards on five receptions and two scores while Andrew Mrozek (Depew, NY/Lancaster) ended up with 75 yards on four receptions and Hogan hauled in four passes for 64 yards and a TD.

Defensively, John O'Hagan (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River) led the Golden Eagles with 17 tackles including nine solo stops.

Brockport will wrap up the regular season with a home game at 1 pm November 12 against Morrisville as the Golden Eagles celebrate senior day.
