Kelly Grinnell (Auburn, NY/Auburn) scored a career-high 17 points as The College at Brockport Women's Basketball team made a valiant effort to stage an upset against Oswego State, but fell Tuesday night 54-44 at Vlogianitis Gym. The contest was the first State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) contest for the Golden Eagles this season.
Grinnell scored only two points in the first half but erupted for 15 second-half points, including five straight points with just under 11 minutes to play to spark a Brockport comeback. Grinnell's previous career-high was 10 points, scored against Smith College earlier this season.
Both teams struggled to find an offensive rhythm to start the game.
Ellen Story (Catskill, NY/Catskill) hit a layup at the 16:27 mark for the games first points. Both teams continued to battle for control until Oswego pulled away with five minutes left in the half, closing out with a 10-2 run. The Lakers led 23-12 at the intermission.
Grinnell came out of the locker room firing, connecting on her first shot of the half, a three-pointer. The Brockport defense clamped down on Oswego, holding them to just five points in the first nine minutes of the half.
At the 10:59 mark, Grinnell connected on another trey. On their next possession, Grinnell converted a layup to bring the Golden Eagles to within three, 28-25. Brockport held their own with the 5-1 Lakers, eventually tying the game at 34 on an
Erica Johnson (Malone, NY/Franklin Academy) three-point shot with 6:42 to play. Oswego's offense picked up in the final five minutes, building their lead to as much as 13. The Golden Eagles could not regain momentum as the Lakers walked away with the victory.
Grinnell finished the game hitting three long-distance shots and also grabbed five rebounds.
Cecilia Sigrist (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit) also scored in double-digits, contributing 11 points and nine rebounds.
