Senior Stephanie Powell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) placed seventh in the competitive weight throw event at the Kent State Open Meet Saturday and with her effort of 16.23 meters (53 feet, 3 inches) earned a chance to compete in the NCAA Division III championships as she cleared the NCAA provisional standard in the event.
Powell broke an eight-year old Brockport school record in the weight throw, besting Heather Hughes' previous record of 16.20 meters (53 feet, 1 3/4 inches), set during the 2002-03 season.
Powell surpassed the provisional qualifying standard for the NCAA Division III championships in the event. Powell has improved her performance in the weight throw in each of the last three meets, going from 14.12 meters to 16.23 meters during that span.
On Monday, Powell was named the State University of New York Athletic Conference's (SUNYAC) Women's Field Athlete of the Week.
Six different athletes also qualified for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships with their marks at the event that had no team scoring.
Melissa Wassink (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) finished fourth in the 1000-meter run and her time of 3:05.47 was good enough to earn a spot in the ECAC Championship field. Wassink earned the SUNYAC's Women's Track Athlete of the Week honors.
Brittany Dodd (Livonia, NY/Webster Thomas) was edged out of the finals for the 60-meter hurdles event but her preliminary time of 9.58 seconds was an ECAC qualifier and Melissa Scorse (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Mendon) cleared the ECAC standard in the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash and improved her qualifying time in the finals as she ran an 8.16 time in the prelims and an 8.05 time in the finals to finish 10th overall.
For the men, brothers Zach and Eric Hine (Elmira, NY/Elmira Southside) each cleared the ECAC Championship standard with times of 22.82 and 23.00 in the 200-meter dash. Pole vaulter Kevin Emley (Randolph, NY/Randolph) also qualified for the ECAC Championships clearing a height of 14' 7 ¼” as he placed fourth overall in the event.
