The College at Brockport senior
Ray Lund (Thiells, NY/North Rockland) won a pair of State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) indoor track and field titles and posted two NCAA Division III National Championship provisional qualifying performances during Saturday afternoon's meet inside the Bristol Field House at Hobart College in Geneva.
Lund captured both the weight throw and the shot put, finishing ahead of junior teammate
Dustin Colgan (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) in both events. Lund recorded throws of 17.82 meters (58 feet, 5 3/4 inches) to win his third consecutive weight throw title, and won the shot put with an effort of 15.66 meters (51 feet, 4 1/2 inches).
Lund was honored as the Outstanding Male Field Athlete of the Meet at the SUNYAC championships.
The Brockport men finished fifth with 62.33 points. Buffalo State (136) was first, followed by Geneseo (135), Cortland (110.66), Fredonia (83) and Brockport. Plattsburgh (41), Oneonta (32) and Oswego (22) rounded out the results.
Brockport's women also finished fifth, with 86 points. Buffalo State (124) was first, followed by Geneseo (106), Cortland (93), Oneonta (91) and Brockport. Plattsburgh (73), Fredonia (42) and Oswego (7) rounded out the results.
Colgan was second with Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship-qualifying efforts in both events. Colgan heaved the shot put 14.84 meters (48 feet, 8 1/4 inches) and in the weight throw he managed throws of 16.21 meters (53 feet, 2 1/4 inches).
Sophomore
Joe Mussler (Hamlin, NY/Hilton) was one of four Golden Eagle men to post ECAC championship-qualifying performances during the SUNYAC championship meet. Mussler set a personal-best and broke the Brockport school record in the 55 hurdles, running in 7.88 seconds to place second, 0.11 seconds behind the winner.
Sophomore
Zach Ferrara (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) qualified for ECAC's in the pole vault, finishing third with a score of 4.70 meters (15 feet, 5 inches). Ferrara posted an NCAA Championship provisional qualifying effort during Saturday's SUNYAC championships.
For the Golden Eagle women, eight athletes qualified for ECAC's, including a trio of weight throwers. Sophomore
Nicole Jones (West Charlton, NY/Galway) who won the shot put (12.17 meters/39 feet, 11 1/4 inches) and placed third in the weight throw (14.35 meters/47 feet, 1 inch). She posted ECAC-worthy efforts in both events.
Senior
Stephanie Powell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) was second in the weight throw with a score of 15.72 meters (51 feet, 7 inches) and senior
Stacey Gibbins (Eden, NY/Eden) was fourth with throws of 14.28 meters (46 feet, 10 1/4 inches). Both qualified for ECAC's, as did juniors
Becky Fabbiano (Lockport, NY/Lockport) and
Melissa Wassink (Rochester, NY/Gates Chili) and seniors
Melissa Scorse (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) and
Brittany Dodd (Livonia, NY/Webster Thomas).
Fabbiano placed second in the pole vault (3.25 meters/10 feet, 8 inches), Scorse was fourth in the 55 dash (7.41), Wassink was fourth in the mile run (5:10.76), Dodd was fifth in the 55 hurdles (8.73)
Senior
Ashley Redino (Getzville, NY/Williamsville) also qualified for ECAC's in the preliminaries of the 55 hurdles, posting a time of 8.94 seconds.
The ECAC Championships are March 4-5 at the Armory in New York City.
