Williams’ Career Day Sinks Plattsburgh

Williams scores career-high 30 points in 93-77 win.

Junior Gerald Williams' career-high 30 points lifted Brockport past Plattsburgh 93-77 Friday night.
BOXSCORE

Junior Gerald Williams (Rochester, NY/Charlotte) scored a career-high 30 points, leading the Brockport Golden Eagles (10-9 overall, 8-4 State University of New York Athletic Conference) to a 93-77 victory over the Plattsburgh State Cardinals Friday night inside Brockport's Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium.

“It's the preparation. My coaches told me all along you can't make shots without preparation.” Williams said after his career game. “My teammates gave me good passes, they hit me in the hands right, and I just let them fly.”

Williams' 30 points is the first time that a Golden Eagle has accumulated 30 points in a game since then-junior and current assistant coach Brandon Williams scored 34 points in a 91-77 win against Roberts Wesleyan in December 2007.

“I told these guys for the last week that I felt something coming on,” Greg Dunne, Brockport's fourth-year head coach, said after the win.

“I feel that we're starting to get it. It's effort-based on the defensive end, because we scored 93 points, and I can guess that 30 of those points came from our defense getting steals, loose balls and pushing it up the floor.”

Williams and the rest of Brockport's starting five all reached double-figures in securing Brockport's first regular-season sweep of Plattsburgh since the 2003-04 season.

Junior Kyheem Green (Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman) and freshman Jon Ivy (Rochester, NY/East) each scored 16 points while sophomore Derek Klein (Valley Stream, NY/Long Island Lutheran) scored 11 and senior Zack McTigue (East Aurora, NY/East Aurora) added 10 for the Golden Eagles.

“It's a great confidence builder.” Williams said of the win, Brockport's third in a row, that moved them within one game of second-place Plattsburgh in the SUNYAC.

“Motivation, all those words, we are going to take this to the next opponent and hopefully get more wins.”

Brockport won the first matchup against Plattsburgh 75-65 on the road January 8th.

The Golden Eagles held a 28-16 lead late in the first half before Plattsburgh (13-6, 9-3) tied the game with 35 seconds remaining in the half. Sophomore Stephen Sisson (Ballston Spa, NY/Saratoga Springs) responded by hitting a three-point shot with six seconds left as Brockport led 41-38 at the break.

Brockport gained a double-digit lead early in the second half off a Sisson three-pointer, his second of the game, and never looked back as the Golden Eagles maintained their double-digit cushion for the rest of the contest.

The Brockport lead grew to as large as 20, 72-52, when freshman Dorian Hayden (East Northport, NY/Northport) hit a three-pointer with 8:31 remaining. Brockport hit seven of eight free-throws in the last five minutes to deny the Cardinals a chance at a comeback.

Brockport hit a season-best 60 percent of its three-point shots (12 for 20). Klein added nine assists as Brockport out-assisted Plattsburgh 23-9.

The Golden Eagles return to action with a 4 p.m. game Saturday afternoon against Potsdam.
