Ray Lund (Thiells, NY/North Rockland), a three-time State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) weight throw champion, finished 11th at the NCAA's annual Division III indoor track and field national championship meet.
Lund was seeded 10th out of 14 entrants at nationals, which was held March 11-12 at Capital University's Capital Center Fieldhouse in Columbus, Ohio.
Competing against the best of the best, Lund threw 59 feet, 6 3/4 inches during his flight at nationals, good for sixth place in his heat, and 11th overall.
The top nine finishers from the preliminary heats advanced into the finals. Lund missed competing in the finals by 8.25 inches (0.21 meters).
Lund qualified for nationals on the strength of an NCAA automatic qualifying standard performance of 18.85 meters (61 feet, 10 1/4 inches) during the Robert Kane Invitational Meet at Cornell University on Feb. 13. That heave was a personal-best for Lund, who won the overall weight throw championship that weekend at Cornell.
Sophomore Pete Delzer (Wisconsin Oshkosh) captured the championship in the weight throw with a heave of 64 feet, 3 3/4 inches (19.60 meters).
