Junior Melissa Wassink (Rochester, NY/Gates Chili) broke a Brockport school record in the 1,000 meters and placed seventh at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) indoor track and field championships Saturday afternoon.

 

Wassink raced in two minutes, 59.22 seconds, 0.01 seconds faster than the eighth-place runner, during the final day of the two-day competition, which took place inside the Armory in New York City, NY.

 

Wassink shattered the previous Brockport record of 3:03.59, set by Lindsey Goldberg during a 2004 meet at Bowdoin College.

 

Senior Stephanie Powell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III national championships in the weight throw during the competition. Powell placed fifth at ECAC's, throwing 15.95 meters (52 feet, four inches) while senior teammate Stacey Gibbins (Eden, NY/Eden) also provisionally qualified for NCAA's after placing tenth with throws of 15.24 meters (50 feet).

 

Senior Ray Lund (Thiells, NY/North Rockland), who captured his third consecutive State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) title in the weight throw last weekend, placed 14th at ECAC's with a throw of 16.14 meters (52 feet, 11 1/2 inches). Lund fared better during Friday night's shot put competition, placing fifth and posting a provisional qualifying effort of 15.54 meters (51 feet).

 

Also from Friday night, sophomore Nicole Jones (Charlton, NY/West Galway) placed eighth in the shot put with an effort of 12.17 meters (39 feet, 11 1/4 inches).

 

This was the final tune-up for Brockport's indoor track and field athletes before the NCAA Division III National Championship meet, which is March 11-12 in Columbus, Ohio.
