Senior Ray Lund (Thiells, NY/North Rockland) won a pair of State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) outdoor track and field championships as members of The College at Brockport's team brought home five individual titles on Day 2 of the championships Saturday at Geneseo.

 

Lund won SUNYAC's in the hammer throw, recording an effort of 175 feet, seven inches (53.52 meters) to win by 25 feet, eight inches for his second straight SUNYAC hammer throw championship. With the throw, Lund posted another NCAA championship provisional qualifying effort.

Lund also won the discus with a heave of 140 feet, four inches (42.77 meters) and he posted an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) championship-qualifying effort in both the hammer and also the shot put, where Lund was third with an effort of 49 feet, 6 1/4 inches (15.09 meters).

Brockport's women placed fifth with 107.5 points, trailing only Cortland (164), Oneonta (135), Geneseo (127) and Buffalo State (117). Rounding out the team scores were Plattsburgh (98.5), Fredonia (55) and Oswego (14).

 

Brockport's men finished sixth with 67 points, trailing Geneseo (187), Cortland (159), Fredonia (132), Buffalo State (109) and Plattsburgh (92). Rounding out the team scores were Oneonta and Oswego, who tied for seventh with 33 points.

 

On the women's side, senior Stephanie Powell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) captured her second straight hammer throw title with an effort of 162 feet, two inches (49.44 meters). Powell won by 15 feet one inch, and was one of three individual SUNYAC titles for the Golden Eagle women.

 

Junior Becky Fabbiano (Lockport, NY/Lockport) won the pole vault, leaping 11 feet, 1 3/4 inches (3.40 meters) while sophomore Nicole Jones (West Charlton, NY/Galway) captured the shot put with an effort of 40 feet, 8 3/4 inches (12.41 meters). Brockport finished 1-2-3 in the shot put, with freshman Kristine Hoover (Pleasant Valley, NY/Arlington) placing second with an effort of 38 feet, nine inches (11.81 meters), good enough to qualify for ECAC's. Senior Stacey Gibbins (Eden, NY/Eden) placed third in the shot put with an effort of 36 feet, nine inches (11.2 meters). 

Jones became the first Golden Eagle thrower to claim an outdoor shot put title since 1999.
 

Jones placed second in the discus with a throw of 122 feet, two inches (37.25 meters), which qualified her for ECAC's. Gibbins finished third with an ECAC-qualifying effort in the hammer throw of 144 feet, one inch (43.93 meters) and she also was third in the discus, qualifying for ECAC's after her throw of 120 feet, six inches (36.72 meters).

 

Brockport's 400 meter relay team of senior Brittany Dodd (Livonia, NY/Webster Thomas), senior Melissa Scorse (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon), freshman Alissa Kozakiewicz (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) and freshman Caitlin Moeller (Kingston, NY/Onteora) posted a fifth-place finish of 50.62 seconds, good enough to qualify for ECAC's.

 

Scorse also qualified for ECAC's in the 100 meters with a fifth-place effort of 12.53 seconds.

 

Besides Lund, two other Brockport men posted ECAC-qualifying performances. Sophomore Zach Ferrara (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) was third in the pole vault with an effort of 15 feet, one inch (4.60meters) while senior Brad Frink (Canastota, NY/Canastota) was third in the 5,000 meters, running in 15:01.59.

 

The Golden Eagles will compete in the Gator Invitational at Allegheny College on May 13 before traveling to ECAC's, May 19-20 at Moravian College.
