Brockport Plays Nazareth to a 0-0 Tie

BOXSCORE

The College at Brockport Women's Soccer team and Nazareth College may have played to a 0-0 tie on the field but both teams were winners off the field as the team combined for the third annual Golden Challenge for a Pink Cure raising funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer.

The teams combined to raise nearly $2,000 with ticket revenue and t-shirts sales donated to the Comprehensive Breast Cancer Care Division of the Wilmot Cancer Center at the University of Rochester Medical Center.

Brockport (2-1-1) recorded its third consecutive shutout with another fine defensive effort. Senior Erin Asquith (Arcade, NY/Pioneer) was credited with five saves but the defenders led by senior Arielle Schneider (Plainview, NY/Plainview-Old Bethpage) kept the dangerous Nazareth (1-0-2) offense in check. The Golden Flyers had 16 shots in the game but several offensive rushes were limited to just a single shot and in many cases that one shot came from outside the 18-yard box.

After a scoreless first half of action, Nazareth had two quality scoring chances but Asquith made a diving stop on one shot and the second hit off the cross bar.

“It was nice to see the shutout streak extended but I would have been even happier if it was a win too,” said head coach Joan Schockow. “We were organized in the back and communicated well. Offensively, we had our chances but just couldn't put it away.”

In a flurry during the first overtime period, both teams had chances to score. Nazareth's Elizabeth Howell headed a ball across the mouth of the Brockport goal but no teammate was there to knock in the loose ball and it rolled wide of the goal. A minute later, Brockport's Sarah Lawson (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East) lofted a shot toward the goal from 40 yards out that missed the top corner of the goal.

Brockport completes its three-game home stand Tuesday with a 4 pm game against Daemen College.
