Humphrey and Altobelli Score First Goals

Men’s Soccer drops Buffalo State in SUNYAC opener

Paul Altobelli scored his first goal of the season in the 2-0 win over Buffalo State

BOXSCORE

Senior Brian Humphrey (Byron, NY/Leroy) and freshman Paul Altobelli (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) each scored their first goals of the season to lead The College at Brockport Men's Soccer team to a 2-0 win over Buffalo State in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game Friday afternoon on A. Huntley Parker Jr. Field in Brockport. The match was the first SUNYAC contest for each team.

In the first half, Brockport (4-2-1 Overall, 1-0 SUNYAC) had a pair of early chances to score with shots going wide of the goal before Altobelli stole the ball from a defender along the goal line and dribbled free six yards from the corner of the goal and sent a shot across the mouth of the goal and into the opposite corner to giver Brockport a 1-0 lead.

“It was really nice to get an early goal,” said head coach Gary LaPietra. “After that we were able to play a little more freely on the offensive end of the field.”

In the second half, Brockport had several more chances to score but did not notch the second goal until Humphrey netted his first goal of the season with less than 15 minutes left to play. After a failed clearing attempt by Buffalo State (5-1-2, 0-1), Humphrey gained possession of the ball on the left side of the goal and sent a long shot toward the goal. The Bengals goalie tried to make the save above his head but lost control of the wet ball and allowed the shot to fall into the goal.

Brockport held a commanding 14-2 advantage in shots and had six corner kicks in the game compared to Buffalo's two.

“We did a good job attacking the goal today,” said LaPietra. “We need to find a way to capitalize on more scoring opportunities but I was also very happy with the way we defended as well.”

Senior Kyle Sauln (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) made two save in the Brockport goal to record his fourth shutout of the season.
