Soccer Drops Heartbreaker in Final Seconds

Golden Eagles lose with 10 seconds left in second OT at Doug May Classic

Brian Duffy scored on a penalty kick to tie the score against Nazareth

BOXSCORE

Junior Brian Duffy (Hilton, NY/Hilton) was hauled down inside the 18-yard box with less than two minutes left in regulation time and scored on a penalty kick to tie the game at 1-1 with Nazareth College Sunday afternoon in the 8th Annual Doug May Classic Tournament at Nazareth.

The teams played scoreless overtime until late in the second OT when Nazareth's James Wheeler took a through pass in the box and scored the game-winning goal with just 10 seconds left.

The teams played a scoreless first half after a lengthy delay to start the game. In the second half, there was another weather delay of 30 minutes due to lightning in the area with 26 minutes left. After the delay, Nazareth (2-0) took a 1-0 lead with an offensive rush and a crossing pass into the box was tapped in by Luke Elston.

With two minutes remaining, Duffy took a short pass and moved into the 18-yard box past a defender and was looking for a clear shot when he was hauled down from behind prompting the call from the referee for a penalty kick. Duffy lined up a shot to the right side of the net as the goalie dove in the opposite direction scoring the game-tying goal for the Golden Eagles (1-1).

In the second overtime, Brockport had its best chance for the go-ahead goal with three minutes remaining when junior Jeremy Cheeseman (Center Moriches, NY/St. Anthony's) took a give-and-go pass in the 18-yard box but a Nazareth defender made a last second slide tackle to force his point blank shot wide.

Senior Kyle Sauln (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) made six saves for Brockport.
