Box Score

Freshman Phoebe Byrnes (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) scored 19 points and classmate Cecilia Sigrist (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit) added 18 points to lead The College at Brockport Women's Basketball team to a thrilling 77-75 double overtime victory over Alfred University Tuesday night in a non-conference game at Alfred.

Both freshmen hit their career highs while the duo combined for eight points in the overtime sessions to lead Brockport (3-7) to its second straight win. Junior LaDonya Rolle (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) added career highs with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Rolle finished with five points, two rebounds and two steals in overtime.

“I thought Phoebe (Byrnes) played a great game,” said head coach Nicole Beauregard. “She comes from a winning program and knows how to win. At big points in the game she looks to have the ball in her hands and has shown again that she can hit the big shots.”

In a high-scoring first half, Brockport took a 39-37 lead into the halftime intermission but played more aggressive defense in the second half and limited the Saxons (7-6) to 36% shooting from the field and did not surrender a single free throw in the final 20 minutes of regulation play.

“We played phenomenal defense tonight,” said Beauregard. “The whole team combined with the defensive effort and they did a great job playing together. This was an entire team effort tonight for the entire 50 minutes.”

Alfred led by as many as 11 points in the first half and held a 20-9 advantage with 12:36 left in the opening half. An 8-0 run with Byrnes hitting a pair of baskets along with Kelly Grinnell (Auburn, NY/Auburn) and Taylor Cain (Walworth, NY/Wayne) each adding a layup to trim the lead to three points in a span of three minutes.

Rolle connected on a layup and Desiree Fauvelle (Newport, NY/West Canada Valley) drained a 3-pointer to give Brockport a two-point lead with 7:30 left in the first half. The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the half.

In the second half, neither team had a lead of more than four points with the Saxons leading 60-56 with 4:38 left in regulation. Rolle hit a shot to cut the lead to two and after another Alfred basket, Byrnes made two layups in the final two minutes to knot the score at 62-62 after 40 minutes of play.

The Brockport defense stepped up in the first overtime period forcing a pair of turnovers and limiting Alfred to 3-for-9 shooting in the five-minute period.
In the second overtime period, Rolle hit a free throw to give Brockport a 70-69 lead and 30 seconds later added a layup with an assist from Byrnes to tie the game after Alfred had connected on a 3-pointer. Less than a minute later, Alfred missed a 3-pointer and Byrnes grabbed the rebound, moved up the court and drained a 3-pointer of her own to give Brockport a three-point advantage.

Alfred answered with another 3-point basket to tie the score at 75-75 and Byrnes fed an inside pass to Rolle who hit a layup for the go-ahead basket with a minute left to play. Alfred's only shot down the stretch was a last second 3-pointer that fell short.
