Box Score

Gerald Williams (Rochester, NY/Charlotte) used his senior leadership to hit big shots as The College at Brockport Men's Basketball team defeated the Buffalo State Bengals 79-70 at the Buffalo State Sports Arena Saturday. The Golden Eagles complete the season sweep of the Bengals and improve their State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) record to 9-6 and Buffalo State falls to 10-5.

With Buffalo State fighting to get back into the game and down only two, Williams hit a critical three-point shot towards the end of the game to spark the Golden Eagles and carry them to victory. Williams finished with 19 points. Kyheem Green (Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman) finished with 15 points, six rebounds, and three blocks.

Williams opened up the scoring for Brockport in the first half, hitting a long-range three-point shot and converting a layup to score five of the team's first six points. Both teams used an up-tempo attack to begin the first half. Brockport used an early 12-2 run to take a 14-7 lead. Williams sank another three and Green hit a layup to give Brockport their largest lead of the half, 21-11. Buffalo State came back with their own 12-0 run to regain the lead. Trailing 25-23, the Golden Eagles once again went on a run, scoring the games next eight points to regain control. Brockport went into halftime with a 35-30 lead.

The Golden Eagles held Jake Simmons to zero points in the first. Entering the game, Simmons was second in the SUNYAC in scoring with a 20.8 points per game average. Green had a strong first half for the second night in a row as he finished with 13 points and five rebounds. Williams finished with two threes and 10 points in the half. The Golden Eagles also finished with 24 points in the paint in the first 20 minutes.

Both teams traded buckets for the first five minutes to open the second half as Brockport held a 42-38 lead. Jordan Major (Rochester, NY/Charlotte) sank a big three-point shot at the 12:07 mark, his first points of the day, to give Brockport their largest lead of the half, 49-40. The Golden Eagles kept a firm hold on the lead but the Bengals fought back to within two, 59-57 with 5:52 to play.

With Buffalo State controlling momentum, head coach Greg Dunne signaled for a timeout. Following the break, Williams came through in the clutch from beyond the arc once again, sinking a trey at the 5:17 mark to put Brockport up 62-57. Donnell Jackson (Rochester, NY/Edison) converted two consecutive layups where he was followed and hit both free throws to bring the lead to 72-63 with 3:06 remaining. The Golden Eagles hit seven free throws the rest of the way to seal the victory.

Jackson finished with 17 points off the bench and Brockport finished with 28 points overall off the bench. The Golden Eagles forced 21 turnovers and scored 19 points off those turnovers.

Thanks to a Geneseo loss at Fredonia State earlier in the day, Brockport is now with the Blue Knights who also own a 9-6 record. The Golden Eagles travel to Cortland on Tuesday, Feb. 14 and entertain Plattsburgh and Potsdam for the conclusion of the conference season on Feb. 17 and 18.
