Track & Field Places 4th and 5th at SUNYACs

Nicole Jones, Zach Ferrara and Dustin Colgan crowned SUNYAC Champs

Zach Ferrara set the SUNYAC, SUNYAC Championship and school record in the pole vault Sunday
Junior Nicole Jones (West Charlton, NY/Galway) won the shot put with a school-record throw, junior Zach Ferrara (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) won the pole vault with a meet, SUNYAC and school record height and senior Dustin Colgan (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) won both the shot put and weight events to lead The College at Brockport Men's and Women's Track & Field squads at the State University of New York Athletic Conference Championships Sunday afternoon at Hobart College in Geneva.
 
Ferrara cleared the 5.0 meter height (16' 4 ¾”) on his first attempt to set the three records and win the event for the Golden Eagles. Jones broke her own school record in the shot put on her second throw of the day with a winning toss of 12.69 meters (41' 7 3/4”) and cleared 12 meters with five of her six throws on the day. Colgan was the lone double winner for Brockport winning the shot put by over five inches with a winning distance of 15.53 meters (50' 11 ½”) and was the only competitor to clear 16 meters in the weight throw winning by just less than three feet with a winning throw of 16.08 meters (52' 9 ¼”).
 
In the team competition, Brockport placed fourth on the women's side with 66.5 points and fifth on the men's side with 80 points and just nine points away from third place at the meet. For the women, Cortland won the SUNYAC title with 163 points followed by Buffalo State (121 points), Geneseo (109) and Brockport. The Golden Eagles finished ahead of Oneonta (52.5), Plattsburgh (47), Fredonia (39) and Oswego (23). For the men, Geneseo won the meet with 152 points followed by Cortland (118), Buffalo State (89), Oneonta (86.5) and Brockport. Rounding out the team scoring was Fredonia (46), Oswego (26) and Plattsburgh (24.5).
 
Brockport had several athletes score points as freshman Rachel Malone (Fairport, NY/Fairport) took 7th in the mile run and then a short time later finished third in the 3,000-meter run scoring points in both events for the Golden Eagles. Becky Fabbiano (Lockport, NY/Lockport) was the second place finisher in the pole vault and Jones was second in the weight throw. Additionally, Catelyn Ploetz (Cuba, NY/Cuba-Rushford) was 7th in the 60 meter dash, Caitlin Moeller (Kingston, NY/Onteora) was 7th in the 400-meter dash and finished in the scoring with two different relays. The 4x400 relay took sixth with Moeller, Gina Medici (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North), Violet Yox (Brockport, NY/Brockport) and Kelly Burke (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) while the Distance Medley Relay was third with Yox, Moeller, Kim Engels (Elma, NY/Iroquois) and Sarah Ritchie (Hilton, NY/Hilton). In the field events, Jessie Sector (Sand Lake, NY/Averill Park) was 5th in the pole vault, Kristine Hoover (Pleasant Valley, NY/Arlington) was 4th and Maggie Needham (Cheektowaga, NY/Depew) was 5th in the shot put while Needham was 5th and Hoover 7th in the weight throw. Ann Milliken (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) also scored points with an 8th place finish in the weight throw.
 
For the Brockport men, Matt Avery (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) was second in the 5,000-meter run and Nate Matthews (Frankfort, NY/Sauquoit Valley) was the runner-up in the 800-meters. Greg Dziuba (Clarence, NY/Clarence) was 8th in the mile and both relays scored points for Brockport. The 4x400 relay with Zachary Brown (Brewerton, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse), Eric Hine (Elmira, NY/Elmira Southside), Zach Hine (Elmira, NY/Elmira Southside) and Kevin Wartinger (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) took 6th while the Distance Medley Relay with Dziuba, Dave LaMantia (Jamestown, NY/Southwestern), Matthews and Avery captured 4th place points. In the field events, Will Johnson (Johnstown, NY/Johnstown) was 7th in the triple jump, Antoine Keels (Rochester, NY/East) was 4th in shot and 6th in the weight throw, Brendon Ganschow (West Seneca, NY/Wets Seneca West) took 5th in the shot put, Darius Favors (West Haverstraw, NY/North Rockland), Jon Mordoff (Vestal,, NY/Vestal) and John Bicocchi (Commack, NY/Commack) took 4th, 5th and 7th respectively in the weight throw.
