Track & Field Wins Four Events at Cortland Meet

Golden Eagles sweep women’s shot put and win both 4x800 relays

Junior Nicole Jones (West Charlton, NY/Galway) won the shot put event while both the men's and women's 4x800 meter relay teams also finished first as The College at Brockport Track & Field squads competed over the weekend at the Cortland Invitational Meet Friday and Saturday in Cortland.

Jones won the shot put with a throw of 13 meters (42' 8”) as the Golden Eagles swept the top three places in the final results with Maggie Needham (Cheektowaga, NY/Depew) and Kristine Hoover (Pleasant Valley, NY/Arlington) taking second and third place respectively.

The men's 4x800 relay with Brandon Yokel (Hilton, NY/Hilton), Greg Dziuba (Clarence, NY/Clarence), Alex Chirico (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) and Nate Matthews (Frankfort, NY/Sauquoit Valley) took first with a time of 8:03.56 while the Brockport women's 4x800 relay with Chrissy Wolniewicz (Elma, NY/Iroquois),  Rachel Malone (Fairport, NY/Fairport), Britta Januskiewicz (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz) and Violet Yox (Brockport, NY/Brockport) also placed first in the event with a winning time of 10:04.08. Both relay times and the top two shot put finishers had marks that quailified them for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships.

On Friday, Josh Coon (Brockport, NY/Brockport) won the men's 10,000 meter run with a time of 33:39.19 which earned him a spot in the upcoming State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championship meet for the Golden Eagles.

Other top finished for the Brockport women included Kelly Burke (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) with a second place finish in the 400-meter hurdles, Jones and Needham finished second and third respectively in the hammer throw while the relay of Megan Grace (Alleghany, NY/Alleghany-Limestone), Constance Rodriquez (Massapequa, NY/Plainedge), Gina Medici (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North) and Alison Massaro (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) was second in the 4x100 relay.

On the men's side, Will Johnson (Johnstown, NY/Johnstown) took second in the triple jump, Matthews was second in the 800-meter run, Zack Hine (Elmira, NY/Elmira Southside) was second in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes, Zach Ferrara (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) took second in the pole vault, Darius Favors (West Haverstraw, NY/North Rockland) was the runner up in the discus and Brendon Ganschow (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) was second in the shot put for Brockport.

In the women's 5,000-meter run, Wolniewicz was third with her personal best time of 18:33.12 which was good enough to earn a spot at the ECAC Championships.
