Junior Nicole Jones (West Charlton, NY/Galway) won the shot put with a school-record throw and freshman Rachel Malone (Fairport, NY/Fairport) set a new school record in the 5,000-meter run to lead The College at Brockport Men's and Women's Outdoor Track & Field squads at the Sixth Annual Gator Invitational Meet Friday evening at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania.
The non-scoring meet was the final regular-season competition for the Golden Eagles who will next compete in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy.
Jones broke her own school record set earlier this year at the Red Dragons Invitational in Cortland as she won the shot put event with a throw of 13.38 meters (43' 10 ¾”). Jones is the only thrower in school history to clear the 42-foot barrier and was one of five Golden Eagles to place among the top-10 in the event at Allegheny. Maggie Needham (Cheektowaga, NY/Depew) was fifth, Ann Milliken (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) was seventh, Kristine Hoover (Pleasant Valley, NY/Arlington) was eighth and Courtney White (Massena, NY/Massena) was 10th.
Malone broke 5,000-meter record set by Kelsey Conn as a freshman in 2008 at the University of Maryland as she completed the race in Allegheny in 17:31.66. The time eclipsed Conn's record by nearly four seconds and won the event. Only eight freshmen have posted faster times in the event this year in the country.
Other top finishers for Brockport included Kelly Burke (Massepequa Park, NY/Massepequa) with a fourth place finish in the 400-meter hurdles, White who also finished eighth in the discus and Hoover who took ninth in the Hammer Throw.
For the Brockport men, Josh Coon (Brockport, NY/Brockport) was second in the 10,000-meter race with a time of 33:10.42, Andrew Baker (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) was third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Nate Matthews (Frankfort, NY/Sauquoit Valley) was fifth in the 800-meters, Dustin Colgan (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) was fifth in the shot put and Brendon Ganschow (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West)finished sixth in the shot put.
