Box Score

Senior quarterback Joe Scibilia (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) was 21-for-33 for 374 yards and three touchdowns leading The College at Brockport Football team to a 38-24 victory over Buffalo State Saturday in the home opener for the Golden Eagles on Bob Boozer Field at Eunice Kennedy Shriver Stadium in Brockport.

The Golden Eagles (2-0) are undefeated in the first two games for the first time since 2009 and regained possession of the I-90 Bowl Trophy from Buffalo State who had won each of the last two meetings. The win was also the 99th career victory for head coach Rocco Salomone who will have a chance to reach the 100-win milestone next weekend against The College of New Jersey on Homecoming weekend in Brockport.

The Brockport defense kept Buffalo State (1-1) in check a week after the Bengals scored 49 points in a 49-31 victory over Cortland to start the season. The Golden Eagles limited Buffalo to just 26 yards of rushing offense on 20 carries and allowed the Bengals offense for convert just five of 14 third down attempts. Buffalo State was also 0-for-2 on fourth down conversion attempts.

Fourth down conversions on the other hand were a key to the Brockport victory. The Golden Eagles were a perfect 3-for-3 on fourth down tries. On its first drive of the game, Brockport was faced with a fourth-and-two on the Buffalo State 13 yard line and sophomore Tyrone Nichols (Troy, NY/Lansingburgh) bulled his way up the middle for three yards to keep the drive going and Brockport scored two plays later with a Nichols one yard plunge to take a 7-3 lead.

In the third quarter, after Buffalo State had trimmed the lead to 24-17, Brockport was faced with another fourth down play to keep a drive alive. On a fourth-and-four from the Bengals 32 yard line, Scibilia connected with sophomore Andrew Mrozek down the sideline for a 32-yard TD pass as the Golden Eagles stretched the lead to 31-17.

And finally, late in the fourth quarter with Brockport driving to run out the clock and facing a fourth-and-one situation, Scibilia returned to the field after sitting out several plays to use a quarterback push run up the middle for two yards and a first down to essentially finish the game.

Buffalo State scored first capping the opening drive of the game with a 22-yard field goal after a long kickoff return gave the Bengals great field position to start the contest.

Brockport answered with a nine-play 72 yard drive that ended with the Nichols one yard leap over the offensive line to make it a 7-3 game.

The Bengals responded with a long drive that stalled inside the Brockport 20-yard line when Buffalo State went for the first down on a fourth-and-one play but a tackle behind the line of scrimmage by sophomore Brett Evensen (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) stopped the drive and gave Brockport possession.

After four plays with short gains or incomplete passes, Scibilia connected with Jordan Hogan (Lockport, NY/Newfane) for a 67-yard scoring pass to put the Golden Eagles up 14-3 with 2:20 left in the opening quarter.

Buffalo scored before the end of the first quarter to trim the lead to 14-10 but early in the second quarter, senior EJ Genzano (Albany, NY/Guilderland)

The Bengals were driving near the end of the first half with the ball on the Brockport 25-yard line before junior John O'Hagan (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River) intercepted a pass and returned it to near midfield.

In the third quarter, Brockport opened the half with a 10-play drive that stalled but a Scibilia punt was downed at the six-yard line pinning the Bengals deep in their own end of the field.

On the fifth play of the Bengal drive, Colby Morabito (Rochester, NY/Hilton) picked off a pass the raced 25 yards into the end zone to boost the Brockport lead to 24-10.

Buffalo State came back with a 10-play scoring drive on its next possession but Brockport regained the two-touchdown lead with Scibilia's fourth down scoring pass to Mrozek in the ensuing possession.

The teams traded punts to start the fourth quarter before Brockport took a commanding lead. After a short completed pass and two short runs, Scibilia hit Mrozek for a 70-yard scoring play to give the Golden Eagles a 38-17 lead with 10:52 remaining in the game.

The Bengals scored with 3:40 remaining to cut the lead to 38-24 but Brockport kept possession of the ball for the final minutes with a nine-play drive that ended inside the Buffalo State 10-yard line as time expired.

Scibilia finished with a career-high 374 yards on 21-of-33 passing. The 374 is the fourth best passing performance in school history. Mrozek had six catches for 129 yards and two scores and Nichols led all runners with 89 yards on 27 carries.

Defensively, Ross Ragonesi (East Northport, NY/Northport) led the team with seven tackles while Jesse Galvin (Leicester, NY/York) and Evensen each finished with six stops. Morabito registered five solo stops, broke up four passes and returned his one interception for a touchdown.
