The College at Brockport Women's Basketball team lost a late lead to Fredonia as the Blue Devils rallied in the final minutes to take a 69-68 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) victory.
Cecilia Sigrist (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) recorded a double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds, both career-highs for the sophomore.
Brockport trailed 57-54 with just over seven minutes to play but the Golden Eagles went on a 7-0 run within a 44 second span to regain momentum. The Golden Eagles used a solid shooting performance in the first half to set the tempo. Brockport controlled a 12-9 lead after a three-point shot from
Phoebe Byrnes (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) and a layup from Sigrist. Fredonia brought the deficit to one, 16-15, but the Golden Eagles went on an 8-0 run to pull ahead. In the closing minutes of the half Grinnell found a streaking Byrnes with a cross-court pass to put Brockport up 36-26. Brockport went into the locker room with a 37-32 lead
The Golden Eagles entered the game shooting 35.8 percent for the year but Brockport shot 55.6 percent from the floor in the first half on 15-27 shooting. Byrnes provided the long-distance shooting for the Golden Eagles, hitting 2-3 in the first 20 minutes.
The opening minutes of the second half proved to be much of the same for the Brockport offense as the Golden Eagles connected on its first three shots, including a three-pointer from Sigrist, the first of her career. Brockport held a 49-41 lead with 14:31 to play until the Blue Devils stormed back. Brockport held the lead for 23:26 until the Blue Devils grabbed a 55-54 lead with under nine to play.
Brockport's 7-0 run kept things interesting, but the SUNYAC leading-scorer Becky Hebert propelled the Blue Devils in the closing minutes. Sigrist provided a final opportunity for the Golden Eagles after blocking two consecutive shots on the defensive end with 21 seconds to play to keep the deficit to one, 69-68. Grinnell's three hit off the backboard as Brockport fell just short.
Brockport shot 44.8 percent on the night, its second-highest percentage this year. The Golden Eagles controlled the glass, outrebounding the Blue Devils 41-33.
Ellen Story (Catskill, NY/Catskill) scored 12 points while
Hannalee Fordyce (Amityville, NY/Copiague) scored 10 and added seven rebounds. Grinnell had nine points and a game-high five assists.
Brockport will head to Oswego on Friday night for a 6:00 pm SUNYAC contest before returning home to take on Cortland on Saturday.
