The College at Brockport Women's Basketball played a tight game against Oswego on Friday night but fell to the Lakers 60-50 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action. The Golden Eagles fall to 2-6 in conference play while Oswego improves to 6-1.
Phoebe Byrnes (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) led Brockport in scoring for the third time in four games as the sophomore dropped in 16 points. Byrnes connected on two of three shots from three-point range and shot 6-9 from the floor.
Erica Johnson (Malone, NY/Franklin Academy) dished out a game-high four assists while also connecting on a shot from long range.
Oswego built an early lead over the Golden Eagles but Brockport managed to keep the deficit to a minimum in the first half. Byrnes converted on a layup at the 3:11 mark of the first half to cut Oswego's lead to one, 28-27. The Lakers went into halftime leading 34-27.
Brockport fell behind by double digits in the opening minutes of the second half until Byrnes connected on a three-point shot to cut into the deficit. Oswego led by as many as 15 midway through the second half. Johnson's three came with less than a minute to play to bring the score to 58-50 but Oswego connected on its free throws late to come on top.
The Golden Eagles managed to outrebound the Lakers 43-34, including 14-9 on the offensive glass. Over its last four games Brockport is averaging 42 rebounds a game, almost five rebounds a game higher than its opponents.
Alexandra Marshall (Manorville, NY/Eastport-South Manor) and
Cecilia Sigrist (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) each grabbed a team-high seven rebounds while
Meg Stucko (Elba, NY/Elba) and
Hannalee Fordyce (Amityville, NY/Copiague) grabbed five boards.
The Golden Eagles return to action tomorrow for SUNYAC play against the Cortland Red Dragons. Game time is set for 6:00 pm.
