The College at Brockport Women's Basketball team fell to Cortland 71-53 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action on Saturday night at the Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium in Brockport, NY.
Phoebe Byrnes (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) led the Golden Eagles with 18 points.
Brockport played a strong first half against the Red Dragons as Brockport brought the game to within three with 48 seconds remaining in the first half. Cortland scored four points to end the half and stretched its run to 25-2 over a span of 9:46 to pull away. Cortland improves to 4-4 in the conference while Brockport falls to 2-7.
Cortland jumped out to an early 18-9 lead over the Golden Eagles until Byrnes found her touch. The sophomore hit a layup and followed that up with a three-point shot to bring the score to 20-14. Byrnes connected on two more shots from deep, including a three at the 4:01 mark to give Brockport a 29-26 lead.
The Golden Eagles trailed 38-31 at halftime but the Red Dragons caught fire in the opening minutes of the second half. Cortland's defensive pressure limited Brockport offensively as the Golden Eagles fell behind early and the Red Dragons came out on top.
Byrnes finished the night shooting six of 10 from the floor, including 4-7 from three-point range. The sophomore guard scored 15 points in the first half. Byrnes has hit 12 of her last 20 three-point shots over Brockport's last four games.
Cecilia Sigrist (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) grabbed a team-high seven rebounds as the Golden eagles outrebound Cortland 39-31.
Erin Cunningham (Marlboro, NY/Marlboro) came off the bench to score six points on 3-3 shooting in eight minutes of action.
Up next for the Golden Eagles will be a SUNYAC matchup against Buffalo State on Jan. 22 at 6:00 pm at the Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium.
