A late run in the second half carried The College at Brockport Women's Basketball team to a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) victory over visiting Buffalo State as the Golden Eagles dropped the Bengals 66-56 on Tuesday night.
Cecilia Sigrist (Rochester, NY/East) recorded her second double-double as the sophomore scored a career-high 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.
Brockport (6-11, 3-7) led from the beginning of the game but the Bengals (8-8, 4-5) kept things close throughout the second half. The Golden Eagles led by one, 42-41 with 10:25 remaining in the game but
Phoebe Byrnes (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) sparked a 10-0 run to pull away. Brockport hit 12 of 14 free throws in the final four minutes as the Golden Eagles snapped a four-game losing streak. The win also snaps a six-game losing streak to the Bengals.
Sigrist shot 8-14 from the floor and hit 5-8 free throws to lead the Golden Eagles. The sophomore had scored just 10 points in her previous two games combined before coming through against the Bengals. Sigrist had 11 points and seven rebounds at halftime. Byrnes contributed her fourth career 20-point game as the sophomore shot 50 percent from the floor. Byrnes hit five free throws in the final minute to clinch the victory.
With the game tied at six in the opening minutes of the game, Brockport put together a 9-0 run to jump ahead early. Byrnes put Brockport up 21-11 with a layup midway through the first half. Brockport limited the Bengals to 29 percent shooting, including 1-7 from three-point land as the Golden Eagles held a 33-25 lead at the intermission.
The Golden Eagles struggled to score in the opening minutes of the second half as Buffalo State scored six straight points to bring the game within two. Sigrist came off the bench and made a quick impact, scoring two baskets in the paint. The Golden Eagles controlled the lane to regain control of the game.
Meg Stucko (Elba, NY/Elba) converted a three-point play to put Brockport up 39-35 with 14 minutes remaining.
The Bengals hung around, cutting their deficit to one. Byrnes' started the 10-0 run with a jumper followed by two free throws.
Ellen Story (Catskill, NY/Catskill) sank a jumper followed by a pair of free throws from
Alexandra Marshall (Manorville, NY/Eastport-South Manor) and another jumper from Sigrist to build a 52-41 advantage. Brockport's solid free throw shooting sealed the conference win.
Brockport held Buffalo State to just 26.5 percent shooting on the night, the second lowest percentage for a Brockport opponent this year. The Golden Eagles also collected a season-high 55 rebounds, out-rebounding the Bengals by 14. Marshall led the Golden Eagles with a career-high 13 rebounds.
The Golden Eagles will continue its SUNYAC schedule with a pair of home contests against Oneonta on Jan. 25 and New Paltz on Jan. 26.
