Freshman Chelsea Stahl (Brockport, NY/Brockport) scored the game-winner for The College at Brockport women's soccer team in a 1-0 conference win over visiting Geneseo on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Eagles came out quickly on offense to start the game. Brockport fired off seven shots in the first 10 minutes of the game, but the Geneseo goalkeeper was able to come up with the saves. Vanessa Gillette (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia) headed a pass from Courtney Szczesniak (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) that was just high of the goal at 5:54. A minute later, Gillette had another great shot, but it was saved. Stahl ripped a strong shot that was inches wide of the goal at the 9:53 mark.

The Geneseo offense settled down after the opening minutes of the game and had more opportunities to score as the half went on. Laura Thompson (Victor, NY/Victor) came up with a big save at 10:55, shutting down the first shot that the Knights had.

Thompson played strong for the Golden Eagles throughout the whole game. She shutdown a Geneseo forward at 24:55, coming out to the right top corner of the box and diving out for the ball. Minutes later, the Geneseo offense had another great shot, but Thompson was there with the save.

Szczeniak came up with a big play defensively, stealing the ball off a Knight forward in front of the goal as Geneseo had an offensive advantage.

As time was winding down in the first half, Geneseo looked to have control of the ball, but Stahl came up big for the Golden Eagles. At 39:49 she took a shot that sailed wide and followed up with a shot just high a minute later. With only 1:48 seconds left, Stahl dodged the Geneseo goalkeeper and was able to slip the ball into an empty net.

The second half continued to be a close with both teams pressuring the goalkeepers. Geneseo had a lot of shots early on, but Thompson continued to be strong in net.

At 65:18, Cayli Carmona (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) came close to scoring for the Golden Eagles with a header that sailed just wide of the net.

The game remained neck-and-neck in the final minutes, but Thompson and the Brockport defense managed to keep the Golden Eagles lead.

The Knights finished the game with a slight 17-16 advantage in shots, while both teams each took five corner kicks.

Thompson made a season-high 11 saves and earned her fifth shutout of the season.

Brockport returns to action Friday at home for a SUNYAC matchup against Oswego at 3:00 pm.
