Mark Sylvia (Northville, NY/Broadalbin-Perth) netted his career goal and helped lead The College at Brockport men's soccer team to a win over visiting Plattsburgh 3-1 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Friday afternoon. With the win, the Golden Eagles have clinched at least a top four finish in the SUNYAC standings.

Plattsburgh started out with control early in the first half. The Golden Eagles struggled to get the ball out of their defensive end cleanly. The Cardinals took advantage at the 8:52 and struck with the first goal of the game. Ethan Votraw found himself wide open at the top of the box and shot the ball into the top right corner of the goal.

The Cardinals held Brockport without a shot for over 20 minutes. However, the Golden Eagles made their first shot of the game count. Sophomore Peter DiLorenzo (Hicksville, NY/Hicksville) was able to beat the Plattsburgh back line with a text book pass from Chris O'Gorman (Wading River, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) and nailed the ball into the back of the net.

As the first half continued, Brockport began to settle into their play and gain more control. Freshman David LaPietra (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) bombed a shot from outside the box with less than five minutes to play, but it sailed high of the net.

Plattsburgh nearly took the lead again in the beginning of the second period, but goalkeeper Casey Sullivan (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minoa) came up with a huge save at 53:32 to keep things even.

The defense came up big for the Golden Eagles in the second half. The Cardinals had an opportunity to once again take the lead around the 64 minute mark. A Cardinal forward found himself wide open with the ball just steps in front of Sullivan, but a Brockport defender got his foot on the ball to knock it away. Seconds later, the defense stepped up to block another shot from Plattsburgh.

With the game going back-and-forth, Sylvia gave Brockport the answer it needed. Senior Bobby Ross (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) took a throw in and launched the ball into the box that deflected off the Plattsburgh goalkeeper. Sylvia was there to knock the ball into the back of the net.

The Golden Eagles held the Cardinals to zero shots for the remainder of the game. With under three minutes left to play, Brockport added another goal. O'Gorman finished on a crossing pass across the box from Sylvia.

Plattsburgh finished the game with a slight 13-10 advantage in total shots, while both teams each recorded three corner kicks.

Brockport returns to action back on the turf on Saturday morning at 10:00 am against Potsdam for the final SUNYAC game of the season.
