Box Score

Junior Anthony Bianchi (Rochester, NY/Aquinas) finished with 14 tackles, two pass breakups and an interception to lead The College at Brockport Football team to a 14-3 victory over The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) matchup Saturday in Ewing, New Jersey.

The win for Brockport (5-3 Overall, 4-1 NJAC) moved the Golden Eagles into a first place tie with Rowan atop the NJAC standings. Brockport and Rowan are the only two remaining teams in the conference with only one loss. Rowan was a 10-9 winner at Cortland Saturday. Rowan finishes with games at Kean next week and at home against TCNJ while Brockport faces Montclair at home and Morrisville on the road to close out its regular season.

On Saturday, the Brockport defense forced three turnovers and four punts and gave up just 233 yards on the day. The only points allowed came on a field goal early in the fourth quarter after the Golden Eagles held TCNJ out of the end zone from the eight yard line. In the fourth quarter, Brockport ended three TCNJ drives – one on downs and the other two on interceptions.

Bianchi's interception came on the final TCNJ drive of the game ending any chance of a late comeback attempt.

Offensively, the Golden Eagles were led by sophomore quarterback Wayne Bonsell (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) who completed 21 passes for 259 yards and the running attack of freshman Dan Andrews (Rochester, NY/Franklin) who rushed for 101 yards on 16 carries. Both Bonsell and Andrews had rushing touchdowns for Brockport.

Brockport won for the fourth consecutive game when both Bonsell and Andrews entered the starting lineup. All four victories are against NJAC opponents.

Five of Bonsell's completed passes went to senior Jake Spalik (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) who caught five passes for 51 yards and eclipsed the 2,500-yard career reception milestone. The all-time leading receiver in school history now has 2,519 total yards in his four-year career.

Brockport missed a field goal in the first quarter after a long 17-play drive that consumed nearly five minutes but spanned just 29 yards. TCNJ countered with a drive moving the ball 54 yards in 12 plays but that drive too, ended with a missed field goal.

The Golden Eagles scored the first points of the game in the second quarter with a 79-yard drive that took just eight plays and just over two minutes. The key play in the drive was a 47-yard run by Andrews taking the ball all the way to the TCNJ 20-yard line. A short run and a 7-yard pass completion to Spalik set up an 11-yard TD run for Bonsell giving Brockport the 7-0 lead.

Brockport opened the second half with a scoring drive to take a 14-0 lead. Bonsell completed 6-of-8 passes on the drive including an 8-yard pass and catch to Spalik on a 3rd-and-7 play early in the drive. He also completed a 15-yard pass to Andrew Mrozek (Depew, NY/Lancaster) who was making his first appearance since mid-September after an injury kept him from the lineup.

Defensively, Bianchi was the top tackler with his 14 stops while freshmen Jake Brickler (Hilton, NY/Hilton) and Luther James (Brooklyn, NY/Progress) had nine and eight tackles respectively. Each had a pair of tackles behind the line of scrimmage and James added a quarterback sack. Bianchi and Kharif Pryor (Brooklyn, NY/Thomas Jefferson) each had interceptions in the fourth quarter. Jesse Galvin (Leicester, NY/York) Joe Riley (Ossining, NY/Ossining) and Cortland Haines (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown) each added six tackles. Haines had two tackles for loss and a sack.
