Katie Gildemeyer (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) netted a game-winning goal in the final minutes of the State University of New York Athletic Conference quarterfinal game as The College at Brockport women's soccer team defeated Oswego 2-1.
The first half saw a lot of action, but neither team could put the ball in the net.
Laura Thompson (Victor, NY/Victor) came out and snatched the ball away from an Oswego forward who had the chance to score just 10 minutes into the game. Freshman
Chelsea Stahl (Brockport, NY/Brockport) had the Golden Eagles first shot of the game. Stahl got herself in front of the net at 7:43, but the Oswego goalkeeper came in sliding to save the shot. Stahl had another great shot at 28:15, but the Laker goalkeeper was able to make a phenomenal save.
The Lakers nearly scored at 29:24 as an Oswego forward was able to dodge past two Brockport defenders, but her shot sailed wide of the net.
Coming out of halftime, Oswego got off to a quick start with a few shots. However, the Golden Eagles worked the ball back into their end. After two corner kicks, Brockport was able to get on the board. Stahl scored her tenth goal of the season after chipping in a shot over the goalkeepers head off of a great cross across the box from
Annie Terilli (Brockport, NY/Brockport).
Stahl nearly added another goal two minutes later, after chipping the ball over the goalkeeper again, but this time an Oswego defender came up with a huge defensive save.
As the second half continued, the Lakers increased pressure on the Brockport defense. Oswego got on the board to tie the game up at the 85 minute mark.
With overtime looking like a possibility, Gildemeyer collected a rebound off of a defender and scored to give the Golden Eagles a lead with less than four minutes to play.
Oswego had a chance to score in the final minute, but Thompson came out for a big grab.
The Lakers finished the game with a 15-9 advantage in shots and a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
With the win, the Golden Eagles advance to SUNYAC semifinals. Brockport will play at Oneonta on Wednesday for an 11:00 am matchup.
