Box Score
Courtney Szczesniak (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) scored a late goal for The College at Brockport women's soccer team, but it was not enough to overcome two first half goals from the Oneonta Red Dragons as they knocked The Golden Eagles out of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament on Wednesday afternoon.
The Red Dragons played strong defense throughout the game, allowing Brockport only three shots on goal.
Oneonta scored the first goal of the game just 18:16 into play. Karly DeSimone collected the rebound off of a blocked shot and put it into the back of the net. Minutes later, the Red Dragons had another chance to score, but the shot hit the post.
Chelsea Stahl (Brockport, NY/Brockport) had the Golden Eagles first shot of the day, but it was saved by the Oneonta goalkeeper. Cayli Carmona (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) tallied a shot on goal too, but it was also saved.
With time winding down in the half, the Red Dragons took a two goal lead. DeSimone notched the game-winning-goal, her second of the day at the 40 minute mark. Desimone took another shot before the end of the first period, but Laura Thompson (Victor, NY/Victor) came up with the save.
In the second half, Oneonta scored a third goal but it was called back because it was offsides.
The Red Dragon defense continued to stifle the Golden Eagles. Katie Gildemyer (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) had the first shot of the second half for Brockport, but it sailed wide of the net.
Szczeniak cut the Oneonta lead to one with a goal at 84:56. She scored off of a pass from Christina Leonardo (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) with a shot that sailed over the goalkeeper and into the left back post of the net.
In the final five minutes, the Golden Eagles were able to hold back Oneonta from scoring again, but could not find the tying goal they needed.
Brockport will now wait to see if it receives an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Oneonta will take on the winner of the Buffalo State vs. Geneseo game on Saturday at 1:00 pm for the conference title.
