Erica Johnson (Malone, NY/Franklin Academy) scored a season-high 10 points on 3-5 shooting from three-point range but The College at Brockport Women's Basketball team dropped a 55-44 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup at Buffalo State on Friday night.
Phoebe Byrnes (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) chipped in 10 points as well for the Golden Eagles.
As a team, Brockport shot 6-13 from beyond the arc as Johnson and Byrnes combined for five threes on the night. The Golden Eagles could not transfer their outside shooting success inside, however, as Brockport finished the game shooting just 29 percent from the floor.
Looking to take the season sweep of the Bengals, Brockport used the three-ball from Johnson early on. The junior hit back-to-back threes to give the Golden Eagles a 13-12 lead with 10:17 remaining in the first half.
Meg Stucko (Elba, NY/Elba) hit a layup to put Brockport up 17-14 minutes later but the Bengals regained control with a 7-0 run. Johnson cut into the deficit with her third three of the half with under four to play. Buffalo State scored the final four points of the half and went into the locker room with a 27-20 advantage.
Brockport kept things close to open the second half until the Bengals went on a quick 10-2 run to pull away.
Bree Fortney (Loraine, OH/Loraine) brought Brockport to within two, 28-26, but paired with the Bengals run, the Golden Eagles failed to hit a field goal for almost five minutes. Byrnes sank a three-point shot at the 4:26 mark to bring Brockport within four, but the Bengals scored 11 of the final 15 points of the game to earn the win.
Brockport out-rebounded the Bengals 39-36, led by
Hannalee Fordyce's (Amityville, NY/Copiague) game-high 12 boards. The 12 rebounds tied a career-high for the first-year member of the Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles limited Buffalo State to just 1-13 shooting from beyond the arc, but the Bengals managed to outscore Brockport 22-10 in the paint.
Brockport will close out its regular season tomorrow night at home as the Golden Eagles host Fredonia at 6:00 pm. The game will be the final game for
Kelly Grinnell (Auburn, NY/Auburn),
Ellen Story (Catskill, NY/Catskill) and Johnson.
